In a recent study examining the relationship between expectation and experience of flavor, researchers conducted a taste test with over 200 participants in which each person tasted two versions of a cola beverage, one of which they were told contained a “secret ingredient.” Because the secret ingredient was white vinegar, researchers were surprised when participants preferred the white vinegar version of the cola beverage by a margin of three to one. Which of the following, if true, offers the best basis for an explanation of the fact that participants preferred the beverage containing white vinegar? a Most people actually prefer a cola beverage containing white vinegar. b Study participants focused on identifying the beverage with the “secret ingredient”. c Researchers added only a small amount of vinegar to the cola. d Study participants were selected based on their enjoyment of white vinegar. e Most cola recipes contain no white vinegar.

B it is If X happens -----> Y happens Because the secret ingredient was white vinegar, researchers were surprised when participants preferred the white vinegar version of the cola beverage by a margin of three to one. So if the scientists were surprised it will negate options A and E D undermines the study.

IMO the word preferred indicates that the participants thought the soda w/ white vinegar tasted better. I am definetly with A: If most people IN FACT PREFER a cola beverage containing white vinegar, that explain (in other words: offer the best basis for an explanation) WHY participants preferred the beverage containing white vinegar. Anybody challenge my argument? Thank u all,

My choice is B. I understand how D is tempting, but I can't think of a valid reason for the researchers to choose people with a taste for white vinegar, as it would skew the results.

In fact, if people had been selected based on their enjoyment of white vinegar, researches would not have been surprised with the results, would they?

IMO the word preferred indicates that the participants thought the soda w/ white vinegar tasted better. I did... I chose D, but now I am not too confident in my answer. You were correct. OA: D

I too picked D, but got confused seeing the reasoning of snipertrader mentioning the keyword 'surprised' It surprised me as I missed the word while analyzing. Here, do we need to assume that researchers have picked the participants? Not necessary, that is why, they got surprised. This is the only reason I see to justify the reasoning of the word 'surprise'. Opinions!!
