123.Degler does more than merely summarizing existing research; he constructs a coherent picture of two centuries of studies dealing with the changing roles of women.

(A) Degler does more than merely summarizing - Wrong as it has a tense problem. "DOES more than merely SUMMARIZING" summarizing is not correct . SUMMARIZE is a better tense word. I do not know better way to explain. Pardon me. Read the complete sentence with "existing research" .. summarizing existing research", this sounds wrong.

Note :- Normally we tend to forget to read the complete sentence, and check for error only in the underline part. This WILL lead to a wrong answer. Once you pick the wrong answer, read and feel it. Sometimes, u have to go by the ear. If you read only the underline portion, the sentence would be correct, but the adjoining sentence may not flow with the one you have picked. Just a tip.

(B) Degler’s study is more than a mere summarizing of - Wrong, reason, very much similar to b and a little bit wordy. Usage of Summarization would have made me think twice, but still E is better.

(C) Degler has done more than a mere summarizing of -Wrong, again tense problem. Had it been, Degler has done more than a mere summary of, I would have fallen for that, scratching my head.. :)

(D) Degler’s study has done more than summarize merely - Wrong, this sounds like it was Degler's study that has done the summarization and not Degler.

(E) Degler does more than merely summarize - Correct for correct usage of tense and it is concise.

I hope this helps. Correct me if I am wrong.

Running in the Park(Gerund form of noun) at night(adverb) is(verb) dangerous.
In the stem of the problem summarizing existing research is a gerund.
merely is an adverb and cannot be used to modify a noun.

A) is out for the above reason.

B) is OK but changes the meaning of the sentence. The sentence is talking
about Degler and not his study.

C) Once you say Degler has done and compare it with something else then it should be an action. The sentence should be
[ Degler has done(action) ] more than(comarision) [ merely(adverb) summarize(verb) (action) ]

D) Adverb is placed wrong and also the sentence changes the meaning.

E) is the best and compares Degler's actions with some other action properly

it is also comparision of action verbs. so it a choice between "does vs sumarize" and "does vs. sumarizing".

"does vs sumarize" sound better over "does vs sumarizing".

so E makes sense.
