Hi fellow Gmatclubbers,

I decided to prepare a quick reference list with the minimum TOEFL requirements for most popular schools. Hope it will be of some use!

TOEFL score requirements for various schools
(work in progress)

Notes:
1. All requirements are for TOEFL iBT format, unless specified otherwise
2. All information was taken from official schools’ sites.
3. Even if school does not have an official cut-off score, or if this score seems ridiculously low, it is an applicant’s interest to check an average score of the accepted students in order to form a realistic understanding of what is required.
4. Overall, it seems you will be OK with 100 for the vast majority of schools, but you will need closer to at least 110 for the most competitive ones.

TOEFL Requirements for US Schools
SchoolTOEFL ScoreNotes
Harvard109strongly recommended by adcom
Stanford100
WhartonRequiredno cut-off score; average is given as 111
MITNot Requiredmay be included if an applicant wishes to do so
Chicago Booth104otherwise ‘admission would be contingent upon meeting the minimum scores or other language requirements’
– info from their site
KelloggRequiredno cut-off score specified. Note that average is 109 (2011)
ColumbiaRequiredno cut-off score specified
TuckRequiredno cut-off score specified
Berkeley (Haas)68note that average given for reference is 113
Michigan (Ross)100
Duke (Fuqua)Requiredno cut-off score specified
Darden100not a strict requirement
Yale100
NYU SternRequiredno cut-off score specified
Cornell JohnsonRequiredrequire 600 for old paper-based tests (with 5 in TWE), which corresponds to 100 in new format (with 25 in Writing)
UCLA (Anderson)87they note that you should have a good excuse for anything below 100
CMU (Tepper)Requiredno min score for TOEFL iBT is given, but they specify 600 for old Paper-Based test, so I think it’s 100 for iBT

TOEFL Requirements for Top European Schools
SchoolTOEFL ScoreNotes
IMDNot RequiredTOEFL is not required, but there is general requirement of ‘strong command of spoken and written English’
(evaluated through GMAT, essays and interview I guess)
INSEAD105note that those for whom English is native language, must show knowledge of another language as entry requirement
LBSRequiredno specific ‘cut-off’ score is specified. Last year, there was an unofficial recommendation of 109+, but people with lesser scores could get in.
IE100
IESE100Note that IESE requires 100 for its FT MBA and 93 for its Executive MBA
HEC100Alternatively you can present IELTS score of 6.5 or TOIEC score of 850

TOEFL Requirements for UK Schools
SchoolTOEFL ScoreNotes
Ashridge100
Cambridge (Judge)110min 25 in each section
Cass105
Cranfield100
Manchester100no individual element must be below 20
Oxford (Said)109this is new requirement for 2010
Warwick105

More schools to be added soon!

Thank you!!!
This is great.

P.S. I added a bit of formatting to post it as a table - feel free to remove if you don't like it.

Thank you greenoak for the post. You were doing a great job!

However, for Anderson UCLA. I've found conflict requirements.

From Anderson school, the minimum score is 100 (iBT)

But from UCLA graduate school, the requirement is based on sub scores and total score as well. That really seems more strict.

Writing: 25
Speaking: 24
Reading: 21
Listening: 17
Total minimum passing score: 87

Did you notice that?

Yes they are pretty tough on TOEFL. My friend had to retake it to get 113 after getting 105 on his first attempt. So retake or skip it.

Good one!
Though I felt like skipping the test even though I am an international student.

Is it possible to be admitted to Columbia, Kellogg, NYU Stern, Duke which have no cut-off score with the score - 98? (23, 28, 22, 25)?

Thanks for this post.

Just a query - does having a high Toefl score really make a difference?
For eg. Suppose the cut off and average class profile is 100 for Toefl iBT, does having a 117 really help?
