A good strategy to improve your TOEFL score that will also help you in business school is reading business related periodicals and books. I recommend The Financial Times, New York Times and The Economist. Read an article that interests you and think about what the main points were, and get into the habit of breaking down the article and analyzing the different parts. Practice does make perfect.

Here's a blog post that recommends many pre-MBA reads.

I see that Duke (Fuqua) does not require TOEFL scores :? :?

"There is no requirement to submit test scores, but if you choose to do so, please know that there is no minimum score. We admit applicants with a range of test scores." - DUKE FAQ

FYI Insead no longer has a cut off at 105, from this year. You can now apply with less since the video thing.

I'v just checked the Insead's website and I found information on the video thing but nothing that indicates that there is no longer a cut off at 105 for the TOEFL IBT. Can you tell me where you saw that point please ?

In-house Event at Fontainebleau on sep 23rd. Admissions Officer (Stefanie Hanny) said, it is still recommended to get a 105, however there is no longer a cutoff, you can now apply with a 100, 103, 104 etc, as the video component will now help assess your English proficiency.
You can always call to confirm, if you find yourself in that case.

Hi guys,

I have a question: a just received my TOEFL Score and got a 99.
However, most of the schools ask for 100 points and the deadlines are pretty tight right now (that means I do not have time to do another test and try to reach the 100+ points).

What should I do? Retake the test and leave the application for next year? Try to go for it with 99 points? Ask to ETS rescore speaking an writting (I believe that I can get a higher score especially in Speaking) and pray to have 1 extra point?

You can submit this score to the universities for now and tell them that you're retaking. They will welcome your new score.

Hi, guys!
Could you give me an advice what to do with my humble 92 TOEFL score?
It was my first attempt, my subscores are 23, 24, 25 and 20 (speaking).
I wanted to apply for Wharton and Northwestern and another not so famous universities.
Officially, Wharton does not set any minimum scores, but they show an average one which is not like my score of course.
I would like to retake it, but I have no time to do it before Wharton and Northwestern deadlines.
So should I just not apply for these top programs or apply for it with retaking and sending the TOEFL score later?
Thank you!!!

Is a skewed TOEFL score problematic for an admit? I am a fairly decent speaker but my TOEFL scores don't reflect it. My overall scores match all the cut-offs of my Target B-Schools but I think I am falling short by a couple of points in the speaking section. Please guide.

Thanks

TOEFL scores in this range are perfectly good. At this level, your TOEFL score is good enough for most universities. With these TOEFL scores, you also have a shot at getting a position as an RA, TA, or GA on campus. 100-110: These are very good TOEFL scores.

TOEFL score :108

I know for a fact that Fuqua does not mandate TOEFL and also Tuck has written that if the medium of education in your university outside of US is English, then the TOEFL waiver may apply. I have written to Tuck to confirm this update and will update this thread shortly.

cheers!

Hi fellow Gmatclubbers,

I decided to prepare a quick reference list with the minimum TOEFL requirements for most popular schools. Hope it will be of some use!

TOEFL score requirements for various schools
(work in progress)

Notes:
1. All requirements are for TOEFL iBT format, unless specified otherwise
2. All information was taken from official schools’ sites.
3. Even if school does not have an official cut-off score, or if this score seems ridiculously low, it is an applicant’s interest to check an average score of the accepted students in order to form a realistic understanding of what is required.
4. Overall, it seems you will be OK with 100 for the vast majority of schools, but you will need closer to at least 110 for the most competitive ones.

TOEFL Requirements for US Schools
SchoolTOEFL ScoreNotes
Harvard109strongly recommended by adcom
Stanford100
WhartonRequiredno cut-off score; average is given as 111
MITNot Requiredmay be included if an applicant wishes to do so
Chicago Booth104otherwise ‘admission would be contingent upon meeting the minimum scores or other language requirements’
– info from their site
KelloggRequiredno cut-off score specified. Note that average is 109 (2011)
ColumbiaRequiredno cut-off score specified
TuckRequiredno cut-off score specified
Berkeley (Haas)68note that average given for reference is 113
Michigan (Ross)100
Duke (Fuqua)Requiredno cut-off score specified
Darden100not a strict requirement
Yale100
NYU SternRequiredno cut-off score specified
Cornell JohnsonRequiredrequire 600 for old paper-based tests (with 5 in TWE), which corresponds to 100 in new format (with 25 in Writing)
UCLA (Anderson)87they note that you should have a good excuse for anything below 100
CMU (Tepper)Requiredno min score for TOEFL iBT is given, but they specify 600 for old Paper-Based test, so I think it’s 100 for iBT

TOEFL Requirements for Top European Schools
SchoolTOEFL ScoreNotes
IMDNot RequiredTOEFL is not required, but there is general requirement of ‘strong command of spoken and written English’
(evaluated through GMAT, essays and interview I guess)
INSEAD105note that those for whom English is native language, must show knowledge of another language as entry requirement
LBSRequiredno specific ‘cut-off’ score is specified. Last year, there was an unofficial recommendation of 109+, but people with lesser scores could get in.
IE100
IESE100Note that IESE requires 100 for its FT MBA and 93 for its Executive MBA
HEC100Alternatively you can present IELTS score of 6.5 or TOIEC score of 850
