Quick Answer
Based on GMAT Club, U.S. News & FT 2026 data
Three rankings, three different #1s in 2026: Wharton leads the GMAT Club ranking, Stanford GSB tops U.S. News, and MIT Sloan is #1 in the FT Global MBA — Sloan's first time ever at the top. Note that an FT "—" isn't always a quality signal: Stanford opted out of FT 2026 and Columbia missed the alumni-survey threshold.

These three rankings are not directly comparable — each differs in scope, methodology and data inputs. MIT Sloan topped the FT for the first time ever in 2026.
GMAT Club vs U.S. News vs FT: Why MBA Rankings Disagree
Three drivers explain the gaps: scope (GMAT Club and U.S. News rank US programs only; the FT is global), methodology (each weighs different inputs), and participation (the FT requires schools to opt in and hit alumni-survey thresholds).

Same school, different story
MIT Sloan
FT #1 · GC #6
FT's alumni salary & career-progress lens crowns it; GC's placement + selectivity mix ranks it sixth.
Booth
GC #4 · FT #20
Elite US placement and selectivity; FT's global, alumni-survey view places it far lower.
Stanford GSB
USN #1 · FT opted out
Its FT absence is a participation decision, not a quality signal.
Harvard
GC #3 · USN #4 · FT #10
Close across US lists; FT's salary-growth math is harder on high-entry-salary cohorts.

Frequently Asked Questions
All three rankings are annual: the FT Global MBA publishes in February, U.S. News in April, and the GMAT Club ranking in May. This page shows the 2026 editions of all three.
Each ranking measures different things. GMAT Club weights placement success at 50%, U.S. News puts 40% on employer and peer reputation surveys, and the FT builds 56% of its score from alumni surveys on salary and career progress. MIT Sloan, for example, is #1 in FT 2026 but #6 in the GMAT Club ranking.
The M7 is an informal group of seven elite US programs — Wharton, Stanford GSB, Harvard, Booth, Kellogg, MIT Sloan and Columbia — widely treated as a peer group by applicants and recruiters. They carry the M7 chip in the table above.
The FT only ranks schools that participate and meet a minimum alumni-survey response rate. In 2026, Stanford GSB opted out for the second consecutive year, Columbia missed the survey threshold, and SDA Bocconi is absent after ranking #4 in 2025. An FT dash reflects participation, not quality.
When schools receive the same score, the publisher assigns them the same (joint) position and skips the next one. In U.S. News 2026, Harvard and Kellogg are joint #4; in the FT, IESE and London Business School share #4.
Yes. Rankings average a fixed set of criteria across all applicants; a program can rank modestly overall yet be the best fit for your budget, target region, industry or post-MBA goals. Look at the components behind the rank, not just the headline number.
Total cost and scholarships against expected salary, recruiting strength in your target industry and geography, program length (one-year vs two-year), class size and culture, location and work rights, and each school's own employment report.
Use rankings to build a shortlist, filter by hard constraints — budget, geography, GMAT/GPA profile, intake dates — verify outcomes in employment reports, then decide between finalists by talking to current students and alumni.
