An elementary school class tried feeding apples, broccoli, cucumber, hay, and lettuce to a guinea pig and a rabbit. When given any two of these foods, each animal clearly and consistently preferred one over the other:

- The guinea pig preferred apples to broccoli, but the rabbit showed the opposite preference.
- The rabbit preferred cucumbers to hay, but the guinea pig showed the opposite preference.
- The guinea pig preferred cucumbers to the rabbit's favourite of the five foods
- The rabbit preferred lettuce to the guinea pig's favourite of the five foods

Base on the information, select for Guinea pig's favourite a pair of foods such that either might have been the guinea pig's favourite and select Rabbit's favourite a pair of foods such that either might have been the rabbit's favourite. Make once two selections, one in each column.

Just write down the preferences and you should get the answer.
Guinea pig:
The guinea pig preferred apples to broccoli. So broccoli is surely not the main preference.
So option 2 and option 3 are out.

The rabbit preferred cucumbers to hay, but the guinea pig showed the opposite preference.
Clearly cucumber is not but hay can be the favourite.
So, option 4 too is out.

The rabbit preferred lettuce to the guinea pig's favourite of the five foods
Again, this means lettuce is not the favourite
Option 5 is also out

Only A left

Rabbit
The guinea pig preferred apples to broccoli, but the rabbit showed the opposite preference.
So, Apple is surely not the favourite.

The rabbit preferred cucumbers to hay, but the guinea pig showed the opposite preference.
Hay is not the favourite.

The guinea pig preferred cucumbers to the rabbit's favourite of the five
Cucumbers is also not the favourite.

Discard options containing broccoli, cucumber and hay.
Only Brocoli and Lettuce left.

Option B

Is this an OG question? GMAC always uses standard American English spelling, so "favourite" would not be written.

It is from Official Mock-5. But it is indeed spelled as 'favorite' in the actual question. Nice catch!

thanks, this is great!!

Thought Process ->
  • We need to find what could have been the favourite of each animal. I see that the choices are X or Y (so, we may not be able to arrive at a unique, singular answer. We may have to stop when we are able to fix 2 candidates). Good to note. The question stem also tells us this much ("pair of foods").
  • There are 5 food items. Are there ones I can eliminate easily (that CANNOT be favourites)?
GP (Guinea Pig) -> We can eliminate B and C. A > B (A was preferred over B) and H > C (H was preferred over C), so neither B nor C could have been THE favourite of the 5 foods.
R (Rabbit) -> Similarly, we can eliminate A and H. By the same logic.

We still need to eliminate one more food to arrive at the answer. Ok - what other info is there?

Rabbit ->
L > GP's favourite. From this, can we not infer that GP's favourite cannot be L? We can. If GP's favourite is L, then L>GP's favourite is nonsensical. Not possible.

So,
GP -> We can eliminate L. Only A and H remain.
Similarly,
GP ->
C > R's favourite. From this, we can infer that R's favourite cannot be C. Same logic.
So,
R -> We can eliminate C. Only B and L remain.

Answer:
GP: A and H
R: B and L

This is a pretty high quality question, but I dont really think it is an 805+. it is more like a 700.

Heres how to solve quickly and easily:
1. list the foods
a,b,c,h,l
2. list the animals,
G,R

compare them based on the data given
GR
a>bb>a
h>cc>h
c>RFL>GF

we for sure know that for G, hay is preffered over a minimum of 2 foods, C,RF. and in addition, we know that the rabbits favorite food cannot be Hay or apples. So RF could be hay or apples.

if we know apples and hay are possibly the values of GF, then B>a or GF and then L>B>A. Also, if GF is hay, then L>H but may or may not be greater than C. this rules out answer 3. so what you're left with that includes B is L, which you know could be the highest.
