This answer choice does not provide an explanation for the inconsistency noted in the passage. We know that Playwright A was born after Playwright B, however, Playwright B too makes use of the exact same theatrical device.
B. The work of Playwright B is credited with influencing the work of Playwright A.
While it is plausible that Playwright B could have influenced Playwright A, it does not offer an explanation as to how Playwright A is credited with being the first person to make use of the theatrical device while Playwright B was born several decades before.

I would say that this answer choice provides further information which clarifies the inconsistency. While reading the passage, one may be mislead into believing that Playwright A was not around when Playwright B made use of the theatrical device. However, this answer choice illustrates that they were both alive at the same time, and that the younger Playwright A did make use of the device first, with the older Playwright B utilising the same device in his works at a later stage. If one re-reads teh passage, one will notice that there is no mention of Playwright B having made use of the device first.

both seem to be good contenders here. If Playwright B is credited with influencing the work of Playwright A, we can still credit Playwright A with being the first one to break the convention, majorly. But D would fit better as it would establish that Playwright B did come up with the idea at first and he implemented it in his 2 works, but Playwright A broke the popular convention.
My pick would be D, but a tough one!
