lagomez's explanation is right. I think it should be E, bc it uses the modifier (Symphony No. 5 was composed by a brilliant musician) and whom correctly.

I completely agree that the OA for the given Q is E. Although some sources demonstrate that there isn't, in modern English, the difference between WHO and WHOM and that they are used equally.

Yep, pronoun who is used in subjective case and whom is objective case; Similarly with whoever & whomever.

I came up with E as well. But you guys gave some great explanations.

The answer is E because first between who and whom, you have to choose whom because you can replace it by him
eg. many called him vs many called he vs he called .... --> so clearly we have to choose whom over who
so you can eliminate A, B, C
Then the symphony modify "written in Austria in 1762", and not the composer, so there is no confusion, the answer is E

To make sure between who and whom, you have to replace who by he and whom by him, however sometimes you have to rearrange the sentence to replace, then find which one sound better

E; although must admit C made a lot of sense too... till whom won over who
my rule of thumb for who is third person reference; like the subject\object reference in the notes above.

I learned from a PowerPrep class to subsitute out and see if it would be better with "he" or "him". If it makes sense with "him", use "whom". If the sentenece makes sense with "he", use "who."
