MartyMurray KarishmaB gmatknight gmatphobia Can you please explain option B is wrong ? Is it because it is already said in the passage that if we go for the sweatshirt contract , we will already get two weeks to install sewing machine and the installation of the sweing machine need not necessarily begin by the end of next week.
Two weeks are enough for the installation and also no overtime charges are required.
Request your input/ confirmation.

I've added to the explanation for (B). I think you already get why (B) isn't correct, but you can confirm by reviewing the new version of the explanation.

For the executive’s plan to succeed in avoiding the need for overtime, the essential requirement is that the jacket contract can still be completed on time without the need for overtime work. This would allow the company to start the sweatshirt contract two weeks later without incurring overtime costs. Therefore, the key condition that must be met is:

C. If the new sewing machines are installed without overtime work, the jacket contract can be completed on time without overtime work.

This statement ensures that the jacket contract, which needs to be started next week, can be completed on time without requiring overtime, even if the new sewing machines are installed without any overtime work. This allows the company to follow the executive's plan to shift from dress shirts to sweatshirts without incurring additional overtime costs.

If the sweatshirt contract can be started two weeks later, then presumably, the jacket contract can be started two weeks later, in which case they will have two additional weeks to install the machines.

How could you arrive at this based on the passage? What I interpreted was that the sweatshirt contract won't start till 2 weeks later, as opposed to the dress contract which would be starting earlier which would require jacket work to be finished even before (all less than 2 weeks). So i thought option B made sense as the the machines would be ready in time at least a week before sweatshirts have to be started giving time for jackets to be made. I had also shortlisted C, but i'm still not able to be convinced why not B.

My approach of understanding this ambiguous question:

Sewing Machine (SM)
Installing Sewing Machine (ISM)
Working Overtime (WO)
Jacket Contract (JC)
Dress Shirt Contract (DS)
Sweat Shirt Contract (SS)

Accountant :
WO causes No Money
JC needs SM

This week - ISM needs WO, money problem.
Next week - JC
presumably 3rd week (2weeks later) or earlier - DS
(doesn't say when or how long exactly to make DS but looks like the question is fixed that workers can only do one job at a time per 1 week which also make Choice A intriguing)

Executive :
This week - blank
Next week - blank
3rd week (2weeks later) - SS

Subconsciously, anyone new to this question (type of people like me) will think that overtime means workers can work on 2 or more contracts at the same time, which could derail someone such as me.
Somehow the question implies that overtme work only applies to installing sewing machine and it doesn't apply to working 2 contracts at the same time.
Though Executive says "any overtime" but the only overtime the question concerns is "Installing the Machine Overtime"
I tried to think that the executive is competent here LOL but the question wants him to be incompetent and irrational.

Choice C :
This week - ISM don't need WO, no money problem.
Next week - JC
3rd week (2weeks later) - SS

Hi Kavicogsci,

The negation of D is "Workers cannot sew sweatshirts faster on the new machines than on the old ones". D is not correct because the executive's plan doesn't need workers to to sew sweatshirts faster on the new machines. He or she just wants to postpone the start of work for the contract.

This was my 1st Question in Mock 5
Bunuel
Accountant: We need the new sewing machines for the jacket contract, which will not be finished in time for us to make dress shirts unless we start the jackets next week. To install the machines this week, we must pay workers overtime—for which there is no money.

Executive: We can contract for sweatshirts instead of dress shirts. The contract will be as profitable but can be started two weeks later—that way we can avoid any overtime work.

For the executive’s plan to succeed in avoiding the need for overtime, which of the following must be true?

A. Workers who sew jackets and shirts will know how to install industrial sewing machines.
B. The new sewing machines can be installed by the end of next week without overtime work.
C. If the new sewing machines are installed without overtime work, the jacket contract can be completed on time without overtime work.
D. Workers can sew sweatshirts faster on the new machines than on the old ones.
E. A sweatshirt does not take longer to sew than a dress shirt.

Accountant: We need the new sewing machines for the jacket contract, which will not be finished in time for us to make dress shirts unless we start the jackets next week. - If we start jackets next week, we'll finish on time.

To install the machines this week, we must pay workers overtime—for which there is no money. -
Goal - To install machines this week
Minimum condition - we need to pay workers overtime.

Executive: We can contract for sweatshirts instead of dress shirts. - ok.

The contract will be as profitable but can be started two weeks later—that way we can avoid any overtime work. - what overtime? Overtime to install the machines in this week. So even if the overtime is not paid, we can finish the sweatshirts on time? thats the assumption. Missing premise or minimum condition.

For the executive’s plan to succeed in avoiding the need for overtime, which of the following must be true?

A. Workers who sew jackets and shirts will know how to install industrial sewing machines. No.

B. The new sewing machines can be installed by the end of next week without overtime work. - But that doesn't guarantee if the Jackets contract can be completed on time, meaning it can make up for the lost time without overtime.

C. If the new sewing machines are installed without overtime work, the jacket contract can be completed on time without overtime work. - ok

D. Workers can sew sweatshirts faster on the new machines than on the old ones. - no.

E. A sweatshirt does not take longer to sew than a dress shirt. - Even if it take the same time, the overtime aspect in installing the machines is still not covered. There is still a possibility that they may no be able to make up for the 1 week lost without overtime in installing the machines.

D. Workers can sew sweatshirts faster on the new machines than on the old ones.
E. A sweatshirt does not take longer to sew than a dress shirt.
I think treating this question like a math problem would make it easier.

Question asks: For executive's plan to succeed in avoiding overtime, which must be true?

In the stem, the executive says: avoiding any overtime work. This means: Overtime for installing machines (mark it as: OT1) + Overtime for making the sweatshirts (mark it as: OT2)

So, we need to find an option that negates the need for both OT1 as well as OT2.

A: Doesn't address anything about overtime, we can have different sets of workers too.

B: Great, this option does clarify that OT1 can be negated. We won't need workers working overtime to install machines. But we still don't know anything about OT2, and hence cannot confidently say that any type of overtime work will be avoided. Let's see if we can find something more complete.

C: This option says that, if installing sewing machines isn't an issue i.e. they are installed on time, then the jacket contract can be completed without overtime.

Now, in the stem, it states that the jacket contract and the sweatshirt contract have similar profitability. Usually, whenever profit for a contract is calculated, one takes into account the expected wages to be paid to workers. Overtime wages aren't usually expected/planned wages, and hence would affect the profitability of a contract.

If the jacket contract can be completed without any overtime work i.e. there were no extra costs in terms of overtime wages, and the sweatshirt contract's profitability is similar to the jacket's, then no overtime would be paid for the sweatshirt's contract too - because we need to keep the profit of both the contracts similar.
Say normal profit was calculated to be $100 for both contracts, overtime wages, if needed, are $20. So, if a contract requires overtime wages to be paid, profit will reduce to $80. The option says that the jacket contract needs no overtime (its profit is $100), and at the same time the question says that jacket's profit = sweatshirt's profit = $100. This can only be true if the sweatshirt's contract also requires no overtime. This negates OT2.

The stem also mentions that the sweatshirt order can be started 2 weeks later. So, instead of installing machines in this week on overtime, it is plausible that it can be done over the next 2 weeks without overtime.

Combine everything and reread option C as: If OT1 is not needed, then OT2 is also not needed. So, the stem indicates that OT1 is not needed - which in turn tells us that OT2 is not needed. In a way, this option is closer than option B in negating OT1 + OT2. This is the best option we have till now.

D: Even if workers can work faster, but is it fast enough to ensure we don't need overtime? Can't negate OT2.

E: Sweatshirt might not take longer, but is it still less enough to ensure we don't need overtime? Can't negate OT2.

This was the first question on my Verbal Section of Mock. and honestly, I feel its unfair to have the first question this hard. It took me 4 mins to get this right. However, Let me try to drill on my thought process here..what went in my mind as I was also heavily confused between B and C...before finally choosing C

MartyMurray KarishmaB GMATNinja .and all the other experts..I'd be really grateful if you could look at my reasoning and share your thoughts...

A few things before we dive into the question....
Why is it an Assumption question and not inference question......and assumption also not the usual kind.....
In inference question, we have to find hidden information....Write whats already true, and not bring any outside information. Just because it says, its must be true doesn't mean its inference question...

In assumption question, the assumption is the weak link...You fix it(Make it a fact), the argument solidifies...
You attack the assumption, the argument falls, thats why assumption is central to strengthen, weaken, evaluate..

Here, It is something different, we are not asked what is the Executive Assuming, we are asked, what should be the conditions, so that the executive's plan doesn't fail...Means, whatever the logical gap is, between the executive's reasoning and conclusion, we have to fix that.....

Another point to keep in mind, which will be used to tackle B...All assumptions become strengtheners when you consider them a fact. In a way..All assumptions are strengtheners...But All strengtheners are not assumptions....
Small example. Ram need 5 hours per day to study for 1 week in order to be ready for GMAT. Hence Ram will be ready for gmat in a week.
Assumption: Ram will study for 5 hours per day for 1 week.
Strengthen: Ram will study for 10 hours per day for 1 week.

Now for our argument to hold true, we just need Ram Studying 5 hours. as soon as we are sure that ram will study 5 hours, This Assumption becomes a fact, and our argument that ram will be ready for gmat in a week is fixed or strengthened.

If we say, Ram will study 10 hours per day for 1 week. We are strengthening the argument. because its sufficient that if he studies for 10 hours, he will be studying for 5 hours...but this is not our assumption.
Our assumption is at least 5 hours...hence assumption is a necessary condition, and the second statement is our sufficient condition.. and that is why negation works in Assumption statement, but not in all strengthen statements.
Because, Ram will not study for at least 5 hours. Makes the conclusion invalid...
However...Ram will not study for at least 10 hours..Doesn't make the conclusion invalid..because we dont need Ram studying 10 hours...He can still study for 6 hours and make the conclusion valid...

Understanding of this is very important to tackle between Option B and Option C.

Coming to the Argument:
These are Some facts by accountant.
1. New Sewing Machines are a must for a jacket contract.
2. To Install Sewing machines this week, we need Overtime work.
3. We don't have money for overtime work for installing machines.
4. We will be able to deliver on dress shirts only if we start jackets next week

Some facts by executive.
Sweatshirts instead of dress shirts will give us 2 extra weeks.
(There are other facts also, but not very important to argument)

Conclusion, If we take sweatshirt contract of dress shirt we will be able to avoid ALL OVERTIME WORK.

Now, we have to bring in conditions, or statements..that will make this plan work..In a way..you have to look for assumptions, that when considered a fact..leaves no scope for the argument to be said invalid...

Let's state a timeline....
Week 0.. You are here....In week 0 the discussion is happening...It is important to know that you don't know which day of week you are ..it could be the first day or the second day or the last day..

Week 1. This is when Jackets should be started....

Week 6. (An estimation) Dress shirt contract has to begin....

Therefore we need 5 weeks for jackets..

Sweatshirt gives us 2 extra weeks..

Means time till week 8...

So..We need a minimum of 5 weeks, with Sewing machines installed with no overtime work...for No overtime work at all ...

Now coming top options One by one
A. Workers who sew jackets and shirts will know how to install industrial sewing machines.
There is nowhere mentioned that the tailors will have to install the machines...Also I would eliminate this with the word Industrial as well, because though it may seem like industrial work..the machine could very well be for home suited purpose....

B. The new sewing machines can be installed by the end of next week without overtime work.
Now, I spent 2-3 mins decoding this during my mock....
Remember what we discussed about difference between strengthener and assumptions..bring that knowledge here...
Week 0 - You are here
Week 1- You need sewing machine ready for jacket
Week 6 - for dress shirt to begin
week 8 - for sweat shirt to begin...
5 weeks needed for jacket to be completed

Sweat shirt gives you 2 extra weeks..
Now by the end of the week 1..you have utilised only 1 week of the two extra week.. you still have 1 extra week at your hand...So this is a strengthener rather than an assumption...
even if you don't install it at the end of next week, but a week later... that is end of week 2..and start from week 3..You still have 5 weeks to finish jackets and start sweat shirt...So this is not a MUST BE TRUE...
MUST BE TRUE is maximum of 2 weeks without overtime work.....
the end of next week just utilises 1 of the 2 weeks hence it is Sufficient..not necessary... so this is not a right answer..

C. If the new sewing machines are installed without overtime work, the jacket contract can be completed on time without overtime work.
Here, we don't care when machines are installed...We don't care about anything..We just want..machines to be installed on time..and jackets to finish on time..without any overtime work...
This way we can avoid Any Overtime work altogether..This is our minimum..Or necessary condition....
Hence this is the Right Answer......

D. Workers can sew sweatshirts faster on the new machines than on the old ones.
This doesn't have to be hold true....even if they don't work fast...the installation time line gives ample for it to be completed... The fact is we need new sewing machines..wether they are slow or fast...we don't care...Its a fact.. and we can't challenge it...

E. A sweatshirt does not take longer to sew than a dress shirt.
Here, some may think this could be the answer...but remember we are concerned about starting on time for dress and sweat shirt..not finishing on time...Dress shirt could take 1 week and sweatshirt 100 weeks..as long as we are starting and finishing on time of the delivery..we are fine.....So this moved beyond conclusion...there is nowhere written that the delivery date is the same for both....

Please do feel free to critique my reasoning.......Happy to learn more..!
