Question Stats:

0% (00:00) correct 100% (01:56) wrong based on 0 sessions
Team A, team B, team C, and team D take part in a tournament in which every team plays once with each of its opponents. 3 points are awarded for victory, 1 for a draw, and 0 for defeat. The scoring table currently is as follows:
team B 7 points
team C 4 points
team A 0 points
team D 0 points
How many games are yet to be played in the tournament?

a. 0
b. 1
c. 2
d. 3
e. Cannot be determined

What type of qs is this???

Well for 4 teams total of 6 matches will be played....viz:
AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD.....

every team would therefore play three games each with all other 3.....

Team B has 7 points = played all 3 games = 2 win + 1 draw
Team c has 4 points = atleast 1 win and 1 draw....(obviously since no other team than B has 1 point means that C had a drawn match with B)...

Moreover team B has won 2 games that means it has played with D and A...coz the match with C ended with draw...

Team C has also played a game either with D or A....as can be seen from a win to its name....

So we have the played games as under...

BC, BD, BA, C (D/A)......so that means 2 games are still left to be played....

between AD and C(D/A)

So answer must be C (2)....

The another method can be;

The total number of games =6

assume there were x game in which one team won(total points gained by both teams=3) and y games in which it was draw(total points gained by both teams=2).

so 3x+2y=11 (because 11 is the total points earned by all the teams)

The possible solution of this (1,4) and (3,1).

(1,4) cant be answer because if there is only one win,any team can't have 7 point in that situation.(every team plays 3 matches)

SO the answer is (3,1).So answer is C.

yes. this is an insane question. but think can slowly figure it out. They should have less questions on the QUANT. I can't finish them as usual.

I would simple guess and move to another qs on the test day.

Phew !!! :)

The question does not seems tough but looks like there are no shortcuts or formula to solve it quickly.

Took my time to solve it. I believe such questions are the most dangerous on GMAT since

a) Looks like it can be solved given another 20-30 seconds.....
b) No direct formula to quickly arrive at a answer.

Any other thoughts on tackling such problems ????
