Calories consumed in excess of those with which the body needs to be provided to maintain
its weight are normally stored as fat and the body gains weight. Alcoholic beverages are
laden with calories. However, those people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic
beverages a day and thereby exceed the caloric intake necessary to maintain their weight do
not in general gain weight. Which one of the following, if true, most helps to resolve the
apparent discrepancy?
a) Some people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic beverages a day avoid exceeding the
caloric intake necessary to maintain their weight by decreasing caloric intake from other
sources.
b) Excess calories consumed by people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic beverages a
day tend to be dissipated as heat.
c) Some people who do not drink alcoholic beverages but who eat high-calorie foods do not
gain weight.
d) Many people who regularly drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day do not gain
weight.
e) Some people who take in fewer calories than are normally necessary to maintain their weight
do not lose weight.

+1 B

The excess of calories is disipated by heat, so they are not stored as fat.
Hope it helps.

B is best.

However I am confused with the reasoning of D.

Premise - "in general people dont put on because of 2-3 drinks". D affirms the premise. Then how do we refute D? Because it does not give us the reasoning for "why they do not put on"?

d) Many people who regularly drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day do not gain
weight.

Please someone clarify.

Option D: Is a restatement of premise. It is not helping to resolve the discrepancy. But Option B is able to resolve the paradox by showing an alternate reason.

d) Many people who regularly drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day do not gain weight.

Passage is making an argument against the people who take 2 or 3 drinks regularly. More than 3 drinks is out of the scope of this passage. And hence D is incorrect.

I am more confused b/w A & B. Why do we have A as invalid? Somebody please explain..

Following is an excerpt from the passage. Words in bold letters suggest that author has already taken an assumption that 2/3 drinks will exceed the caloric intake.

However, those people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic
beverages a day and thereby exceed the caloric intake necessary to maintain their weight do
not in general gain weight

Whereas in A it says that they will avoid exceeding the caloric intake, which negates the author's assumption. This is the best I could guess, why A is not the correct option. Anybody having other explanations on this?

Some people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic beverages a day avoid exceeding the caloric intake necessary to maintain their weight by decreasing caloric intake from other sources.

a) Some people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic beverages a day avoid exceeding the

b) Excess calories consumed by people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic beverages a

c) Some people who do not drink alcoholic beverages but who eat high-calorie foods do not
gain weight.
d) Many people who regularly drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day do not gain

e) Some people who take in fewer calories than are normally necessary to maintain their weight
do not lose weight.

All, highlighted words are limiting words like Some, many etc but in our passage people are mentioned as "these people" which is generlised word. Thus Only B has no such words . So straight anser B.

Hope I am right in my approach...!!!

Mention of "Some People" and "Many People" in option A, C, D and E helps in eliminating the options in total.

in option A: Some people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic beverages a day avoid exceeding the
caloric intake necessary to maintain their weight by decreasing caloric intake from other
sources.

in Argument: However, those people who regularly drink two or three alcoholic
beverages a day and thereby exceed the caloric intake necessary to maintain their weight do
not in general gain weight.

Question is: why those people who takes alcohol and exceeds calorie intake don't gain weight?

So option A is not the case discussed in argument.

Although the situation can be ,

These people exceeded 10 calories by Alc Bev.;however, they compensated these 10 CALS by decreasing CAL INTAKE fro other source.

Plz give any SOLID reason for neglecting (A) as an expected answer !!1
