I have one doubt...What should be the subject of the question? consumer or the product? ...And...can we change the subject of the statement?

IMO D
Subject is surely products because consumers can NOT be "but many of them can be harmful to health, especially if they are used improperly." Products are harmful and used improperly. A, B brings in confusion by making consumer plural since in that case referent of "they" in remaining sentence is NOT clear

Object of the prep. "of" in the subject clause is never a subject !!
You can change the subject but that would make it passive and akward
