Is x=0?
1. xy=x
2. x+y=y

Statement (1) by itself is insufficient. implies either x=0 or y=1 .

Statement (2) by itself is sufficient. S2 implies that x=0 .

The correct answer is B.
I see why statement 2 is sufficient, but why statement 1 is not sufficient. Doesn't st.1 tells that x=0, so sufficient?.

x can be any number as long as y = 1
