Re: Short term vs Lond term goals [#permalink]
I think you are correct in regards to the short-term/long-term timelines (might want to consider the short-term as 2-5 years). The most important thing is making your short-term and long-term goals make sense, especially within the context of your background and the specific school. I was previously a part of TFA and now work for a non-profit organization. In my essay, I talked about wanting to get into MC at (insert company here) and explained my personal reasons for this desire. I then discussed how the skills I will gain from my MBA and my work at MC firm X will help me eventually transition into education/non-profit consulting. In my Tepper application, I explained how CMU's focus on quantitative skills will allow me to bring skills to the table that are often lacking in the non-profit arena. I made sure to reiterate and expand upon these points during my interview.

I talked about flexibility and engagement as a key factor in leading organisations. To be able to accomplish this, experience within different departments (rotational management) is a good way to gain experience of different departmental cultures. To be well prepared for rotational management assignments, the different specialisations of MBA's were a useful toolset.

In other words, to be able to beable to integrate into a company as a leader, you need to understand the component parts of companies. The MBA provides the toolkit, the rotational experience teaches you how to use it appropriately and in the correct way.

Re: Short term vs Long term goals [#permalink]
Short term basically was what industry I wanted to enter and the function. Long term was senior management in same industry. Obviously it was more wordy but you dont have tons of room in the essays and lots of material to cover. Dont over think it. Obviously saying you want to be CEO of General Electric or Goldman Sachs thats probably unrealistic but saying you expect to work into a senior roll should be possible.

short term: 2-4 years - to work in a different function (start-ups/Product manager) in an industry I'm familiar with (high-tech, I have a masters in EE). Makes sense considering my background

Long term: start a company in the high tech industry, a direct extension (but a challenging one) from my short term goals.
