Need Advice for GMAT & MBA

Hi all.
I am amid a late-20s career crisis. I am thinking about switching careers to marketing and wish to obtain my MBA in Marketing. I want to do more branding/brand management. I need advice badly. below are my basic career highlights.
Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design (2.7GPA unfortunately worked full time the whole way through. My GPA definitely suffered.)
5+ years working as a graphic designer. I've always worked supporting the marketing dept. (developed ad campaigns, web campaigns, collateral, branding etc.) I did help launch a new product line at one of my jobs.
So I know my GPA is terrible. I am aiming to get the best GMAT score to offset the GPA. I am not looking to apply to any ivy league schools. State school would be my goal.
My basic question is am I on the right path? What would my chances, should I get a great score, to get into a MBA program?

I think it really depends on what school you are trying to get into. Do you mind sharing which state schools you are targeting? Where do you live? I think you can get in with a decent GMAT, but "decent" will be defined by which state school.

I live in New Jersey. I haven't taken my GMAT's yet. I'm still researching to see if this is feasible with my background.
I'm looking to apply to Rutgers, William Paterson, FDU. Possibly some in New York City as well. I guess if I get into an out of state school I'll go. The most important aspect is I get into a program. I'm more concerned about what I'll get out of the education rather than what institution I attend.
