Hi All,

Wanted to ask below question

Joe, as well as his friends is going to the beach-->

here "is going to the beach seems correct since we are talking about Joe and "as well as his friends" is separated by comma

If this comma would not be there

would it be still

Joe as well his friends is going to the beach

or

Joe as well his frnds are going to the beach

Please help me understand

as well as -- Is an additive. Additives such as in addition to, as well as, together with etc are used with commas (as they are not the subject of the sentence) and do not change the number(singluar/plural) of the Subject.

If you have to use it without comma, you would use the simple "and"

Joe and his friends are going to the beach.

Hi Ravi,
In a sentence, if the nouns of the subject are not tied together by the conjunction "and", the noun is always singular.
Joe as well as his friends is going to the beach
Joe and his friends are going to the beach

In your above example, there should not be a comma after Joe.

Subject is singular if other than "AND" is present
But
If "OR" is present then subject is one that is nearest to verb
