don,

Theory states that
"global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs"

Let us see the Options
A. "supporting the theory of global forest fires" does not look good..we are not referring to a theory by name...we are stating a theory.

B. Looks good

C.Same problem as in A...

D. It is misleading..It states as though theory is contributing to the extinction of dinosaurs.

E.Same problem as in A..

except B, all other options can be eliminated.

Clear B.

All other options: theory contributing extinction.. which is illogical.

Global fires contributed the extinction

C & D suffer from superficial parallelism and they change the meaning while doing so.

B is correct.

The usage of that in A suggest that metorite was cause of extinction of dinosaurs and not the fires. so A out
C, D and E suggest that the thory caused the extinction of dinosaurs.
B is the best and conveys the correct meaning .

I go for B

Chan expalins the reasoning pretty well. Important to note is that the theory is not just the global fire due to meteorite impact but global fire due to meteorite impact leading to dinosaur extinction. Thus the sentence should not be interrupted by 'that' and 'and'

I can see why people are going with C but "that" is used way to much which makes the sentence lengthy.

Few things:

"the theory of global forest fires" is incorrect. So A, C and E are out...

"the theory that global forest fires" is correct. B and D remain.

D is not parallel:- ....the theory that global forest fires were ignited by a meteorite impact and that contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other creatures.........

Remains B.

first of all "theory that global forest fires " is more sound than "theory of global forest fires " and "theory of a meteorite impact " , so A,C and E are out.

In D the last two words " and that" poiunt to "the theory' no the meteorite impact. So this option is down.

B is the answer.

Expert's post
Apart from, Idiom and style, let’s see how far grammar can come to our aid in this case.
First: “That” is being used as relative pronoun in four choices. In Choice A, “that” refers to the impact; did the fires cause extinction or the impact caused the extinction? .Obviously the fires that were the result of the impact caused the destruction. .In E too, the causal agent is referred to as the impact. This is also wrong reference.
In C and D, what does the word ‘that’ used as a demonstrative pronoun refer to? A demonstrative pronoun such as “that” cannot be a bare pronoun.

So A, C, D and E are all out. Now what are we left with except B? That is the answer and shortest road to Rome :-D .
