B. The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year.
C. The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year’s models’ average price, or about 72$, below this year’s comparably equipped cars and trucks.
D. Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease about 72$, less by four tenths of one percent.
E. Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.

Pick B.
Cannot compare price with cars. Eliminate A.
'decrease' and 'below' are redundant in C. Eliminate.
'Compared to comparably equipped models' is awkward. 'decrease' and 'less' are redundant in D. Eliminate.
We are not contrasting cars with automobile company' Eliminate E.

A: usage of compared with is wrong.Compared with is used when we are comparing different things of same type. For example you can compare Skipping and running with jogging. All are different forms of the same type that is an Exercise.

B: from that is a clearer form of comparison.

Hence B is a clear winner.

Thank you.

A is comparing price to the cost, not OK.

The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s [#permalink]
The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.

(A) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.
This is an incorrect answer as avg. price of next year's model is compared with cars and trucks. Only logical comparison should be either between prices of
cars & trucks for this year and next year or between the cars & trucks themselves.

(B) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year.
This is the correct answer as it logically compares avg. price of next year’s cars and trucks with that of this year. Here "that of" refers to avg. price thus
showing an logical comparison.

(C) The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year’s models price, or about $72, below this year’s comparably equipped cars and trucks.
This is also an incorrect answer as it compares decrease of price in next year model's to cars and trucks itself. Also decrease and below are redundant.

(D) Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent.
This is also incorrect. Same mistake as it compares this year's models with avg. price of next year's cars and trucks.

(E) Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.
This is an incorrect answer. Same mistake as in option D.

Overall only option B shows logical comparison and thus is clearly the correct answer.

A and D: Compared to comparably is redundant, so Eliminate

E "Contrast to..." but the sentence doesn't imply any contrast, eliminate

C has "decrease" and "below" which is redundant

The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year.

All that "... from that of comparably equipped models this year" translates as "next year the price of cars and trucks will be four-tenths of one percent smaller than the price of comparably equipped models [ cars and trucks ] this year"

Hope this helps

Is A also wrong for using

, amounting to $ 72 , this is not a full clause and is separated by two commas. This is not appositive or absolute modfiier either.

I don't think it is wrong to use that. amounting to $72 is modifying "four-tenths of one percent". It is assigning a numerical value to four tenths of one percentage.

Option A- We can only compare similar items. In option A, - The automobile company announced that -
the average price of next year’s models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.
The comparison should be between the average price of x next year and the average price of x this year. Option A incorrectly compares the average price with comparably equipped cars and trucks. Eliminate A

Option B- The automobile company announced that -
the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year.
“that of” refers to the average price. Hence it correctly compares the average price of x next year with that of (the average price of x) this year. Hence, correct.

Option C- The automobile company announced that -
there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year’s models price, or about $72, below this year’s comparably equipped cars and trucks.

It can be a decrease of x from y. It cannot be a decrease of x below y.
Also, note the incorrect comparison made here- decrease of x in next year’s price below this year’s comparably equipped cars and trucks. Eliminate

Option D- Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent.

The automobile company is being compared to comparably equipped models. Eliminate

Option E- Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.

Same as D. Eliminate

No. If you use "compared to/with" for statistics, you're setting up a comparison between two statistics of the same type. So, if your sentence says
The average price of cars and trucks will decrease by 0.4% from this year to next, (as) compared to/with ______,
then you MUST fill in the blank with ANOTHER PERCENT CHANGE, in some quantity that affords a decent comparison in context. That second quantity could just be the price of another consumer good—but it could also be, e.g., the average wage for a certain class of jobs (since there are clearly good reasons to compare the prices of consumer durables to the amount of money that said consumers will earn and be able to spend on them).

In this sentence, we're just saying that the LATER value is going to be 0.4% lower than the EARLIER value—i.e., that there is going to be a decrease of 0.4% FROM the earlier value.

By the way, I don't like the way this sentence is written. Specifically, it's not right to say that the average price OF NEXT YEAR'S models WILL DECREASE.

That doesn't make any sense because "the average price of next year's models" is ONE NUMBER. "The average price of NEXT YEAR'S models" is NOT a dynamic variable that takes on different values at different points in time.

This sentence SHOULD say
The average price of cars and trucks (which IS a time-series variable, taking on different values over time) is going to decrease by 0.4% from this year to next year
... or
The average price of cars and trucks is going to be 0.4% lower next year than it is this year
... or some other valid phrasing that properly expresses the variable quantity as a variable quantity.

Re: The automobile company announced that the average price of next years [#permalink]
The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.

Option Elimination -

(A) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year. - "The average price of next year’s models" are compared with "cars and trucks." Wrong.

(B) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year. - "the average price" would decrease from that "the average price" of models this year. Ok.

(C) The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year’s models price, or about $72, below this year’s comparably equipped cars and trucks. - same issue as A.

(D) Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent. - "models" compared to "the automobile company." Wrong.

(E) Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent. - same as D.
