In for Round 1!

I visited the school last Monday and it was AMAZING. The state-of-the-art new building was jaw-dropping. I would totally recommend the visit to any prospective applicant (it's a Q&A session with a person from admissions and then a tour of the building). The rest of the Yale campus was also incredible.

Good luck!!!

Echoing 8088, do check out the Summer Socials listed at the link above. Members of the Classes of 2016 and 2015 will be around the world hosting small gatherings so you have an informal way to get to know more about us and SOM. I'd highly encourage you all to attend if you can make one near you!

This week alone there are events in Philadelphia, NYC, New Delhi, Mumbai, Mexico City and Santo Domingo...
In the coming weeks we have Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Chicago, NYC, Accra (!!), Tel Aviv and more!

Guiding principles:

Our founding mission to educate leaders for business and society has multiple interpretations:
• We educate purposeful leaders who pursue their work with integrity.
• We educate leaders for all sectors of society—public, private, nonprofit, and entrepreneurial.
• We educate leaders who understand complexity within and among societies in an increasingly global world.
In all of these manifestations, the mission is a powerful means of thinking about how business leaders can contribute value to their organizations, communities, and society at large.
Essay Question:

Yale School of Management has confirmed that the essay question for this upcoming admissions season remains unchanged from last year. According to Admissions Director Bruce DelMonico, the admissions committee decided to stick with this question because it, “…really gets to the core of what Yale SOM is about and embodies our founding mission of ‘educating leaders for business and society.’”

http://som.yale.edu/blog/2015/05/2015-1 ... ?blog=3490

Let’s take a look at the essay question:

The Yale School of Management educates individuals who will have deep and lasting impact on the organizations they lead. Describe how you have positively influenced an organization as an employee, a member, or an outside constituent. (500 words maximum)

They purpose of this question is to find out how the applicants are making an impact in their personal and professional lives. This essay prompt offers you a broad choice to choose your stories/ examples from your professional life, personal life or community involvement. You may choose to discuss more than one experience where you had made a positive impact on an organization. I suggest that you pick 1-2 professional stories and 1 story from your personal life or your involvement in the community. For an effective story, you don’t need to be in a leadership role to make an impact; Yale recognizes that people have an ability to create a lasting impact as a member of an organization as well.

To brainstorm ideas for this essay, I would encourage you to look for examples when you stepped out of your comfort zone and took initiatives that significant change or resulted in the improvement of processes subsequently followed by an organization or a group. One time accomplishments when you successfully led a project that was far behind schedules or a project that resulted in huge financial gains but did not have any long term influences on your organization may not be the right examples for this question. In order to demonstrate you fit with school’s mission, you need to discuss experiences where you were able to make “deep and lasting impact”.

For structure, I again recommend following the same 4 part structure:

• The situation/the challenge (what was the context about the organization?)
• The action (what initiatives you took?)
• The outcome/result (what were the results of your efforts?)
• The significance ( what was the impact you made)

Let’s look at the following example where the candidate is discussing about the ‘outcome’ of his experience and the long standing ‘impact’ he made on his organization.
Example:

“After working several unpaid overtime hours, we succeeded in getting the project got back on track with a better client relationship. Also, we recently received the Inov@r Accenture Brazil award, for the FY12/13 most innovative project in the risk management practice.

The experiences, though demanding, were unmatched because of the challenge of initiating change by me and influencing others. Also, they prepared me to adapt my leadership style to different contexts.”

Finally, you can conclude the essay with a final statement about how you hope to make an impact on the Yale community .

Hi! I will also be in the Northeast from the 12th to the 22nd and will also visit Yale SOM.

I contacted admissions and they said that visits will start in early September (same at Tuck). I am sure that there will be visits when we are around, but we´ll have to keep an eye on our emails to reserve our spots asap (I have been told they fly by). If you can't reserve your spot you could also visit and contact current students, Im sure they will be happy to show you around!

PM me if I can be of any more help.

Best regards,
kheown

Hey Everybody,

It looks like BlogBot might be on holiday, hopefully somewhere warm and sunny, and I wanted to share with you this article on P&Q:

http://poetsandquants.com/2015/07/23/yales-alumni-giving-hits-new-record/

We're really excited that this is one of our highest years of participation and doubly so for our international alums.

As John wrote, this is a fantastic proxy for the value of Alumni networks and I can personally attest first hand that this is true of Yale SOM's network. We're the second highest B-school contribution rate, right behind Tuck's, another fantastic B-school, who's rate is at 70%. Watch out in the upcoming years - it'd be outstanding to out-donate the Tuckies!

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or thoughts about the application process, student life, recruiting, or anything in between below.

Attended the Lagos Event.

Tiffany Gooden, an Adcom member, shared several application tips and I have tried to summarize my major takeaways below;

Resume
Spend some time on your resume
White space where possible to make it easy on the eye.
Don't include anything you don't want Adcom to look up online e.g. Links to internet startups you are involved in.
Get another pair of eyes to review e.g. Friend, current student, alumni etc.

Fit
Spend some time to understand what you are interested in and what the school offers.

General
Clean up your internet profile
Let your applications show a general "roundedness"

Hope this helps...

On another note, hope those essay drafts coming nicely?

Help!

So I work with a consulting firm and all the work is done in project teams which change a lot between engagements.

Any suggestions on what to put in the space for "number of direct reports"?

I am scheduled for the 21st as well, but I am waiting for Tuck interview dates to be 100% sure I'll be able to do it that day.

I'll be in the US for a short period and I have to accommodate visits to some schools, it's being kind of tough...
