As per a recent survey, working mothers prefer jobs offering a flexible role that, in turn, may pay them less but provide them ample time for child care.

(A) that, in turn, may pay them less but provide them ample time for child care

(B) to pay them less, in turn, but to provide them time for child care that is ample

(C) that may pay them less but provides them ample time for child care in turn

(D) that pays them less but provides them ample time for child care in turn

(E) paying them less, in turn, but providing them ample time for child care

bb CrackverbalGMAT KarishmaB MartyTargetTestPrep Can't 'that' refer to 'a flexible role' here? Thought on these lines and chose C. Still not convinced. Looking forward to your guidance. TIA!

I'm not a huge fan of this question - In my opinion D slightly alters the overall meaning of the original sentence by omitting the word "may".
Flexible role that "may" pay less vs Flexible role that pays less.....are quite different.

Also isn't "A flexible role that may pay less" perfectly fine from a sv agreement standpoint because of the presence of that may in between role and pay?

Between C and D I chose C since it retains the original meaning and I didn't think there was any SV agreement issue.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated
