Hi guys, I'm taking the GMAT in 10 days. I've been studying for the past 2 months using different books and tests mainly MGMAT, Kaplan and OG. My test scores are all over the place and I'm worried about my inconsistency. I started very low, close to 600 (especially with Kaplan) but now am mostly around 700 (mostly with MGMAT). For example, 5 days ago I got a 740 and today I got a 680 and this has been the trend. I'm on my second round of taking the practice CATs so there are some repeated questions which I think is inflating the score, but I still am inconsistent and would appreciate any advice on what to focus on these last ten days.

Hi There


Firstly we would say that stay positive and such anxieties are common during exam preparation time. Juggling between work and studies is tough so you need to define a significant time for your GMAT preparation. Sometimes taking few days off work for preparing for the GMAT can help a person tremendously. If you have time this may not be a bad idea. Take practise GMAT tests to see how you are doing. If you cannot do that don’t worry.

What might work instead is to set aside 1-2 hours at night on weekdays and major part of your weekend to study and prepare for GMAT- in this case we will suggest a good 2-3 months preparation. However we recommend you to keep taking practise tests to gauge your performance. It will help you in identifying your weak areas and you can focus on them accordingly.

There are various ways you can use to practise for your GMAT. You might need to change your practise style and try this combination to provide you flexibility and different styles to practise so it doesn’t get monotonous.

It could be combination of-
1-Books- Books like- The Official Guide for GMAT Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review etc could be used.

2-Online Study Guide: Websites like Knewton, Grockit etc provide you with practise questions online.

3-Smart phone applications- Kaplan, Veritas etc offer applications to prepare for GMAT on your smart phones.

Farbizy, have you taken GMAT Prep - I dont see your GMAT Prep scores in the list you have posted. If you have not taken it yet, I'd advice to take atleast 1 test now. It is the best simulator in terms of scoring of the real GMAT, so your results on GMAT Prep will help you get a feel of what score to expect (+/- 30) on the real exam.

When you take a day off, sometimes we over practice and result in burn out.
If that I too near to the real exam it would be a problem.

I had my exam on Monday and took the Thursday and Friday of the week before off from work .
On thursday I. Ra tide some 200 problems plus read 4 chapters of MGMAT SC guide. And resulted in burnout.
Then I took a GMAT prep CAT on Friday and got just 680.
(before that I was getting all 700+ in GMAT prep and MGMAT CATs)

So after the test I just stopped preparing from Friday evening to Sunday morning....
I did get 740 on the real thing on monday(but was expecting more) and I think the burnout has something to do with that . And by the it is not just doing 200+ problems that caused burnout for me...I was reading every explanation and after review re-did all the problems that I got wrong.


In short: know your limits and avoid burn out
