In a survey of 60 people about the preference of the ice cream, 3/5 will put the sweet grass on the last position, 1/3 put the sweet grass ahead of the chocolate, and 1/3 put the sweet grass ahead of strawberry. How many people will put the strawberry on the first position?

can be 16 or 8 but not sure which one :? ...wud have picked 16 in the exam though.

My answer is 4.

36 put Sgrass last
20 put Sgrass ahead of stwberry , so they did not put Sgrass last and ALSO they did not put strwberry at the first
So possible people who put Strawberry first = 60 - 36- 20 = 4

I have many possible scenarios:

20 put strawberry at position 1
the same is true for 21 , 22, 23 strawberries at position 1

it satisfies:
Quote:
3/5 will put the vanilla on the last position,

36 vanila at 3rd place

Quote:
1/3 put the vanilla ahead of the chocolate,

20 vanila ahead of chocolate ( s v c, v s c)
Quote:
and 1/10 put the vanilla ahead of strawberry.

6 ( v c s, or c v s)


do we miss a condition that defines direct connection between strawberry and cholate directly ?

I followed a similar approach

did the following:

1. SVC
2. VSC
3. SCV
4. CSV
5. VCS
6. CVS

Tried forming Eqns after this, but couldn't proceed.

Is this a genuine question ?
I don't think it is well-founded, and the English is appalling.

We know,

CSV + SCV = 36
SVC + VSC + VCS = 20
CVS + VSC + VCS = 6
And sum of all 6 possibilities = 60
So VSC + VCS = 2
SVC = 18
CVS = 4

But we cannot split CSV + SCV up.

there are many possible variants. I think it the question is wrongly given
