It should be D. The conclusion of the argument is that the study is inaccurate.
In D :- "Because of their different metabolisms, men and women are usually given different dosages of medication" , it shows that different dosage is linked to one's gender, and hence the study is not inaccurate.

Re: A study done last year argued that doctors tend to ignore [#permalink]
Straight B.

Lets say 200 prescriptions were written last year. Out of which 150 were written for men and 50 for women. There could be a situation where say 40 were painkillers for women making the odds of them getting a painkiller prescription - 4/5. Men could also have 40 painkiller prescriptions but the likelihood of them getting a painkiller prescription is only 4/15.

A study done last year argued that doctors tend to ignore women's health complaints and prescribe painkillers instead of seeking to determine the underlying cause of the complaints.
The study showed that women are twice as likely as men to receive a painkiller prescription after visiting a physician. Statistics, however, show that men accounted for fully half of all painkillers prescriptions. Evidently, last year's study was inaccurate.

Which of the following, if true, would cast the most doubt on the argument above?

A) Men are more likely than women to require serious medical treatment

B) Last year, 75 percent of the prescriptions written were written for male patients

C) Studies done in the last few years show that symptoms once thought to be psychosomatic may in fact have physical origins.

D) Because of their different metabolisms, men and women are usually given different dosages of medication

E) Women's health complaints are often assumed to have psychosomatic origins, for which the prescription of low dosages of painkillers is standard practice

This was extracted from some Kaplan study book.

Re: A study done last year argued that doctors tend to ignore [#permalink]
The argument is, women are given more painkillers when compared to men, infact twice as much as men.

Lets look at all the answers and find out which strongly weakens the argument.

A --> Strengths the argument
B --> The study was done last year, and this option also talks about last year. If this proves to be true, it seriously weakens the argument.
C --> Doesnt talk about the last year study but the statistics in general
D --> No refernce to painkillers, talks about medicine dosage in general.
E --> Weakens the argument

Comparing B & E, i would choose B since if it is true, it casts more doubt when compared against E.

OA please!!!!!
