Admitted to Olin. Need some ideas....thanks you...!!! [#permalink] New post 22 Dec 2006, 17:42
Just receive a call from Washington University, Olin school of Business. I'm admitted. Now I'm struggling between schools, and some factors such as...finaid will be put on the table. (Notre Dame give me fellowship and a subtaintial amount of money. Not yet known of Olin).
Uhm, just a quick question: should I aim another higher-ranked school for 2nd round? I think of Berkeley, Yale and Duke. But I really lost some motivation when I think that (if) I am admitted without Finaid to one elite school, and it's really tough to choose between near elite with Finaid and elite without Finaid. (Since I'm an international student, and intent to come back to Vietnam after MBA, the overall reputation of the school is somehow important to me. People in Vietnam knows about Yale, Duke and Berkeley, but they don't know much about Washington and Notre Dame, even though those schools are ranked really high)
Would you guys give me some thoughts...Thanks a lot.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Generally speaking, unlike those in the West, most organisations in East Asia are not as willing to pay (high) premium for top MBAs. For those that are willing to, they are likely to be MNCs (e.g. McK in Asia) and would know the quality of Olin et al.

Personally, I would apply to the higher-ranked schools and see if I can get any financial aid from them. If yes, then it would be wonderful - I would just select the school with the best fit.

If the higher-ranked schools do not give any aid, then the school selection would depends on my financial status. If I can afford to go anywhere, I would again choose the school that gives me the best fit, regardless of whether it is giving me aid.

If I'm not financially strong, then I would choose try to balance the aid and fit. Given the "generally speaking" arguement above, I am likely to go to the school that requires the minimum financial outlay from me.

The train of thought thus far is looking from the financial perspective. But if you wish to go to Berkley for self-actualization or the network, etc, then the story may be quite different.
