Any explainations as to why not C :?:

vote for A.

C. Although about 99 percent of more than 50 million
How many million turks are there? this sentence leaves a logical gap for an existance of another 50 million turks of whom 99 percent are hindus.

A. Although about 99 percent of the more than 50 million
Makes it crystal clear that turks are about 50 million, out of whom 99 percent are muslims.

Indeed. A is giving a definite value while C is not.
Thanks for the clarification. :-D

Interesting...

More than 50 mln vs. the more than 50 mln... can someone "spoon feed" me on this one? I don't see the difference how C gives us the gap for another 50 mln... :dunnow

thanks

A. Although about 99 percent of the more than 50 million
B. Although about 99 percent of over 50 million of the
C. Although about 99 percent of more than 50 million
D. Despite the fact that about 99 percent of more than 50 million
E. Despite the fact that about 99 percent of over 50 million

A. we need "the" to specifically point to 50 million. Without "the" sentence doesn't bring out proper contrast..

I went with C and corrected to A.

After seeing mailtheguru explanations, I see that it could be A.

Really it's a great forum to learn.

Although about 99 percent of more than the 50 million turks are Muslims.
It says that turks are 50million and more than 99 percent of this number are muslims.

I believe, key is definite article "the" used in A.
"the" is properly used in A to make "more than 50 million" a definite figure.

So I would go with A.

Although about 99 percent of the more than 50 million Turks are Muslims, the republic founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923 is resolutely secular.

I think it's A. I'm not thrilled about it but the other choices are more flawed.

A it is.

99% of the (adjective) Turks is the correct form.

B: 99% of 50 million is a specific number, meaning change
C: which 50 million? not specific
D, E out because 1) they use despite the fact which is wordy, and 2) they don't specifically refer to a set of turks
