Hello all,
I am new here and have spent a few hours searching and reading without finding much relevant information.
My situation:
Accepted to Saïd last Friday. American, 35 years old, have a(n inexpensive) house which I plan to sell late summer if possible. Not much in the bank.
My concern is the following:
1. Oxford needs a "Financial Guarantee" (as I believe does the UK for the visa):
Quote:
As part of your admission to the School you must show evidence of access to sufficient resources to cover all expenses – this evidence forms your financial guarantee. This is collected by the School and when complete, a copy will be sent to your college for its records. Your college may ask you for similar documentation in its offer letter to you. You can either send a duplicate set or inform the college that it will receive this information from the School. The financial guarantee for the 2010-11 MBA is £49,000.
2. I certainly don't have anything like $60-80K sitting in the bank, and at best the sale of the house will be too late to have that equity on hand.
3. I got an e-mail yesterday stating that I was not short-listed for the Saïd Business School Scholarships (the general merit award). Strange given my 3.95 GPA in a Computer Engineering master's program (a single B+), 1500+ SAT, five years of quality consulting experience, and 730 GMAT. But there it is, nonetheless.
4. These two pages seems to be at odds regarding Stafford loans for Oxford:
Staffordloan dot com "No Stafford loans for Oxford." (I can't post URLs yet, but Google "Unfortunately we can not offer Stafford Loans to students at University Of Oxford.")
Oxford web site: "Stafford loans available" --> (Google "US Federal Student Loans: Information for US graduate students")
5. My credit isn't stellar.
Of course I am trying to learn a lot very quickly. I am also applying for the Vodafone and the Skoll scholarships, but I have to view those as long shots. Given the above, can someone more informed talk some sense into me? I am reading the threads on financial aid, but what about Americans going abroad, or even better, Americans at Oxford? Is it a given that most folks can get Stafford and Grad Plus up to the full amount for a school of this caliber? Or could I realistically find myself having to demonstrate that I have tens of thousands of dollars on hand?
My apologies for the melodrama; not getting any sort of academic scholarship freaked me out a bit.
