E. What I did was reverse the order of the sentence and it came out ok.



Rather than in a separate process,one benefit of learning to speak a language while learning to read it is that the student can more effectively apply his or her knowledge in social settings.

Oh Thanks! Is that from a book/link I can study as well? A and B use Rather Than as well. Why not jsut stick with those? Isn't this choice against the principles of wordiness?

You need to compare the right things

In A rather than seperately and in B rather than independently comparisions are not correct.

You cannot compare learning of something with independently and separately...So a separate process is correct as in E

for the sake of comparison we have to for E.

Instead of is ruled out as it we are not comparing noun/noun phrase.
