Hey bmw4me,
Your story sounds like a unique one that will provide solid material for your essays. Your GMAT score is on the low side of the average for the schools you have listed, but certainly is within range. Focus on bringing out your leadership examples and overcoming adversity in your essays. This will keep you in contention for your target schools. Do you have good recommendations?
Best,
SkyMann,
Yes, I have very good recommendations from my current employer(I exceeded all his expectation and got promoted from an associate level to the senior engineer within 1 year of employment), my previous employer(partner of the venture capital firm), an administrator of the program where I served in various leadership capacities(helped to develop a program that helps students from disadvantaged background to obtain a college degree. Within 3 years we grew the program from 50 scholars to over 3000.) and university vice president(former Harvard BS Staff).
Currently I help tutoring kids from the refugee camp(we have one in our area).
My biggest concern with my target schools are: lack of post grad work experience(1.5 years). I'm not sure if all that WE while in college will be considered (I do have some impressive WE, but it's while in college) and l the gmat score that is on the lower end of the average spectrum(hopefully my above average GPA and 48 in Q section can compensate for the overall 660)
In my essay I do address the fact that I'm the first from my family to graduate from HS, the disadvantaged circumstances I came from and fact that I was able to graduate with two degrees while working(20 hours a weeks) and serving in various leadership positions(20 hours a week on average) debt free.
Is there something I can work on to improve my chances of being accepted to one of my target schools? I would love to study at Tepper(because of it's heavy focus on Quant and Technology), but don't want to be overly optimistic.
