I will be visiting on the 26th for the LGO ambassador day...I will report back (about someone mentioning the nerdiness and big number of Asians)
oh wait, I am Asian but I am not nerdy (I wish I am) lol
MIT/LGO = My #1 school (as I mentioned in a previous post, my chances of getting in is slim to none but applying anyway)

Count me in for R1.
I visited Sloan/MIT this past week and participated in the Ambassadors program, etc. Honestly, my only objective for the visit was to determine if the school was (for lack of a better term) too "engineer-leaning" for me. Despite an initial walk around campus where the nerd-level was quite high (I was a little bit worried), once I was actually in the main Sloan buildings, the mix of students seemed the same as at any other b-school that I've visited. This extended to the lunch chats with current students, and my class visit (Marketing Mgmt with Mark Ritson - awesome professor). I think if you compare the admission stats, you'll see that Sloan has maybe 40%+ engineers whereas other top schools are around 30-35%, so take that however you will. I don't pretend to know the whole program after only one visit, but I think for me Sloan is definitely in the running.
Now ... to start the application and cross my fingers ...

Speaking to the last post, if you come to an Ambassador visit on a Monday or Wednesday definitely go to Marketing Management with Ritson. It is a great class both in terms of knowledge and entertainment.

Attended the Los Angeles information session last night. The alumni were out in full force: there were almost 25 alums present across a variety of interests. I met someone who did exactly what I wanted to do (energy g-lab, courses across MIT, rotational utility program in SoCal) so I can't imagine a better program for me than MIT (except maybe Haas). I hope I can convey that well in my cover letter.

I attended both the admissions chat and Sloan on the Road yesterday, and here is some info I learned: There are LOTS of involved Sloan alumni in SF - there were 30+ at the event All parts of admissions are handled by adcom professionals Last year, 4125 applicants for ~ 400 spots. 11 % admit rate. 18-19% of apps were invited to interview, so interview invite is relatively selective. The interview is not blind, and they often seek to answer questions about your weaknesses. Applications are put onto a scatter plot with 2 axes, demonstrated success and leadership potential. They then continue with the points that are toward the upper right of the graph. This implies that applicants' merits are quantified. I'd assume that many more schools do this, but this is the first time I've heard this publicly instead of the typical "holistic review" answer.

Yeah Business Schools should really stop being hypocritical when they say applicants should be honest and creative. They should stop touting this "holistic" bullshit and I'm glad MIT is doing lots of things differently.

Interesting they would say that. I was late to the LA session, but when discussing admissions, I could have sworn they said holistic.

They may have still used the phrase "holistic review" (I can't recall specifically), but the scatter plot graphing definitely means that applicants are measured along 2 metrics, instead of some nebulous subjective review. I'm sure they still look at all aspects of the application together to reach each score, so their review is holistic. Obviously the methods used to determine each score could be subjective. So yes, their review looks at all parts of the application, but they actually provided a peek into how apps are reviewed instead of giving the stock answer, and that information is useful in crafting a solid total package. The main feeling I got was that their review process was almost scientific (they mentioned weekly scoring caliibration meetings amongs adcoms), and it is probably very difficult to overcome a glaring weakness in either of their metrics.

Also, if anyone is interested in a chat transcript from 10/7, PM me. They stated that they wouldn't post transcripts later and participants should save it out for later review. I haven't gone through it myself because it is pretty hard to follow and very long; participant messages were unmoderated, and they would often respond to questions asked much earlier in the chat without repeating the question.

Question on essays:
I am having hard time in deciding so hoping for some help here ....
In the cover letter Sloan ask the impact thing..
could you use the same story (social initiative in community) and expand it in detail in essay 3 (took responsibility for achieving an objective). Or should I use a diff story (talk about another social initiative that I am working in my company)?
FYI : My Recomender are anyways gonna mention the initiative that i took in my company.

I am planning for R1 right now - but not sure if I can complete it on time. I had attended the MIT Sloan Roadshow in Houston. There were about 10 alums that had turned up. I remember them mentioning the same quantatative approac for evaluating applications - should expect it from MIT.

I am sticking with one example and in order to make it dense...I am devoting 1/3rd essay on making the stage. for ex: For #3 - Please describe a time when you took responsibility for achieving an objective. I have spent ~100 words settgin up the stage and how I fit in. I also explained why did I chose to take the responsibility. Is that the right way? thanks in advacne
