Can't change my mindset [#permalink] New post 10 May 2012, 10:27
Hi everyone. I bombed on the GMAT twice. Scored 480 and 500. After I started reading Manhattan GMAT, I realized the GMAT is actually sort of an acquired taste. Takes time to get used to and can make life great, but I have one big problem. I can't change my mindset. I may have the capacity and knowledge to get a score above 700 on the GMAT, but how does one change a mindset? It's so hard to do. I just can't imagine myself seeing that high score in my mind. What do you do?

For starters, I think that you're suffering from GMAT fatigue. So the most important thing to do is take a few weeks off from anything GMAT-related.

For me, I never really thought about a specific score. It just seemed impossible. How does one specifically aim for a 700 anyway? Do I need to make sure that I answer x number of questions correctly? How many upper-level difficulty questions should I get? There are a million other questions like these to think about and that's just exhausting. Instead, I just focused on one thing: doing the best that I could.

Goals are important, but don't obsess about some number; just do everything that you can to perform at your best on the test.

i second you bmillan01... i kind of bombed too before... i am just working on my goal to secure a MBA seat in a world class MBA university and thats the goal....i will just work towards it to give it a good fight...thats all in my mind...i am planning for 29th of Jun-12 as my EXAM Date... hope i will be in super confidence by then..

Yes to change the mindset, it would definately takes time, but it would be for good... because change, stress are all part of the job that we would have post the MBA and in fact this GMAT prepares us indirectly to it...

A lot of people sore 700 every year, nearly 25,000, so its not unbelievable by any stretch of imagination.
You just need to prepare systematically and leverage your strengths. Being extremely good in either Quant/Verbal(90%ile) and decent in other (75%ile) can take you to 700.
You are starting at 500, so you need to do some solid work to get there, just be prepared for the long haul, and the score is there for the taking.
