Hi, it's my first try with AWA essay. I admit that I have helped myself with the sample paper from
OG.
Do you know whether can we use some expressions from AWA's presented there?
The following appeared in a report presented for discussion at a meeting of the directors of a company that manufactures parts for heavy machinery:
“The falling revenues that the company is experiencing coincide with delays in manufacturing. These delays,
in turn, are due in large part to poor planning in purchasing metals. Consider further that the manager of the department that handles purchasing of raw materials has an excellent background in general business, psychology, and sociology, but knows little about the properties of metals. The company should, therefore, move the purchasing manager to the sales department and bring in a scientist from the research division to
be manager of the purchasing department.”
Discuss how well reasoned ... etc.
Answer:
The argument that for falling revenue are responsible delays in manufacturing and that changing a purchasing manager will solve all problems omits some important concerns that must be addressed to substantiate the argument. The statement assuming that for delays is responsible the purchase manager and that replacing him by the scientist from the research division will solve the problems of falling revenues does not constitute a logical argument in favor of this solution. And need to be further evaluated.
Firstly, the argument assumes that delays are in a large part effect of a poor planning in purchasing materials, but what if the reason was identified wrongly? Maybe for delays are responsible inefficient machines in a factory or maybe unqualified workforce. Further consideration must be done about the other factors that affect production in order to identify them properly. Second, the argument states that the purchasing manager has an excellent experience in general business, psychology and sociology what is crucial for proper conduction of negotiations that is why replacing the manager with the scientist with wide knowledge about metals is extremely risky. Such change can effect in a serious disturb in supply of metals, because the scientist may not be properly prepared for role of a purchasing manager. Finally if the purchasing manager will be moved to sales department and scientist from the research division to the purchases, who will be responsible for the research? A big company, producing parts for heavy machinery must have, well developed, research department. Taking one scientist may effect in a serious difficulties in proper operating.
Because the argument leaves out several key issues, it is not sound or persuasive. If it would include solutions for the arguments, listed above, the argument would have been more thorough and convincing.
