Candidates with lower than av. GMAT who get accepted [#permalink] New post 12 Sep 2005, 16:53
Hi Scott -

I've been lurking around your forum for the past few months and have found your comments to others very helpful.

My question is: Schools report an average GMAT score, which means there are people above the average and also below the average. Most of the time, when people do not have a GMAT score near the "average", they are advised to retake. However, I know that some people who have an excellent application, but a lower GMAT are accepted into top schools. My question is: who are these people? What do their profiles look like?

Most of all, I'm just curious. But, I know these people exist...and I'm just trying to get a better understanding of their profiles. Do you have any experience in running across people who are outstanding in every area except GMAT? Might you share what makes those people worth taking even with a low GMAT?

You're right to remember that those number are JUST averages, meaning that half of the class has a GMAT score below that number. Our general advice is to try to at least be above the lower end of the middle-80% range for a given school. They usually publish that number. As long as you're within that range, you should be okay.

But, to answer your question about who gets in with a low GMAT: Those people are all outstanding in some way. Some have ad amazing careers, some have great personal stories of overcoming adversity, some have taken big risks and succeeded (or even failed), some are natural born leaders, and some are extremely involved in making their communities better. There's no consistent pattern other than the fact that there's something special/memorable about them.

They're the kind of people you're glad you know and just like being around, whether they have a 600 or a 770 GMAT!
