Is anyone else who is attending this event interested in seeing if we can get something organized with Kellogg to get a visit. I doubt there is any chance of a class visit but they may be willing to arrange a tour and talk if we can get a group of people together.

Alright, signed up for the 9/28 event, though not sure if I can make it yet.

Rhyme, I heard the UoC area is pretty bad... how does one get there if they don't have a car? If one gets a car, would he have parking?

Thanks!

From the GSB students I talked to at an event and a friend who went to school there, not an mba student so not sure if that makes a difference...it is very easy to get to. Chicago has a great public transportation system from what everyone has said and if you stay downtown its easy to get to and from. I wouldn't even think about renting a car, not worth the money or the frustration of trying to find parking.

I am just planning on taking the train.

ahh, I was just told that the train doesn't reach UoC and might have to take a bus and walk 0.5 miles in the Hyde Park area (which I heard was bad)... is that true?

Its fine. Its not the kind of area you want to get lost in at 3am while holding a wad of cash, but its a perfectly safe area otherwise. Best way to get there is to take the metra from downtown - it stops right there - maybe a block or two away. Alternatively, you can take the L - but it doesnt stop as near by, and you will need to take a bus. Final option, take a cab. It'll be about $15 to $20 or so from downtown I would imagine.

Parking is a little bit tricky unless you get there early, but there is always space at the Ellis Parking Lot (55th and Ellis) - which is maybe a five block walk to the GSB. Otherwise street parking is plausible. That said, I'd sooner just blow $20 on a cab there and share a ride back with someone
than go through the pain / hassle / expense of renting a car. (or just take the train)

Not quite true. The METRA goes basically right there, the L does not... But either way, its pretty safe. Just use your head as you would in any major city. Make sure you know how to get to campus though. Or just spring the $20 on a cab and share with one of the six or seven other people going.

I'll look into international house. If it's anything like Cal's international house, I'm fine with that. I just want something cheap since I'm by myself.

I assume it's really easy to go from UC to Kellogg then?

In the grand scheme of things during the application process that’s peanuts. My wife and I are spending 2grand on our Chicago trip for plane and hotel alone. Then again its also a few weeks before our anniversary so we are kind of considering this trip our vacation not just a school visit.

I mean the applications cost a few hundred each, the GMAT was 250 (at least you only took it once and didnt take a prep course), if you need a new suit/shoes/tie/shirt anything like that theres some money. I am sure in the end its going to be thousands of dollars and its all an investment.

You may want to hold out until we figure out Kellogg...if that works out then that probably makes it a lot more worth it.

Wharton is holding a Chicago event the night of September 28th. You guys that are visiting might want to attend just to make the trip more worthwhile.

I won't be attending because I'll apply to Wharton for R2 and they will make a return trip to Chicago before that.

river: thanks for putting things in perspective. I guess I don't mind the money part as much as the TIME part, flying there just for the infosession and then flying right back. Generally I like to stay around and "vacation" a bit, but the end of Sept will be a busy time at work, so I don't even know if I can take those two days off.

I should definitely wait for Kellogg to see if they can give us a tour and class visit, since it wouldn't be worth it for me to fly there just for Chicago, considering I probably won't apply R1 (maybe R2).

forcefeed: Wow, all these things are happening at the same time! I don't know if I can survive 3 infosessions/visits in 2 days! ;)
