Hey guys - Just want to know what some of you have been doing that constitutes 'Community Service'. I am based in India now and community service isn't a big part of any facet of life here (at least in my experience). I need to fill this hole in my app. now so I thought I'll get some ideas from all of you.

In the UK, when you commit a minor crime, you are sentenced to xx hours community service. So to get your community service, you need to commit a minor crime in the UK

I'm in the US, where these opportunities are bountiful. I volunteer for a brain tumor patient advocacy group, which has been pretty interesting. They recently appointed me to the board! :punk:

I found it on the United Way's website. I'm not sure if they list ex-US volunteer opportunities, but it has loads of cool things in the US.

Please try to refrain from doing community service solely for your business school applications. The school will be able to see right through you and you won't be likely to put your heart into your work. Service should be something you do because it makes you feel good - not because you feel obligated to do so.

Even if there aren't service organizations for you to join (which I believe there are lots of them in India) you can go out and help the community on your own - that shows initiative, leadership and compassion.

Agree :-)
Doing community service just for b-school application and then forgetting it is not a good idea. The admissions committe will make out whether you put your whole heart in doing the service. I suggest you to dig deep within yourself and understand what really excites you and satisfies you. If you have not done any comm service till today then be it. Try to cover up for this by something else in your application.
