Dear Consultants Gurus,

I recently wrote GMAT and scored a 700 with an essay score of 5.5. I am Indian and have done my graduation in Computer Science engineering. I passed out in May, 2005. Thereafter I joined ABN AMRO consumer banking in Feb 2006 and got promoted in 2008. I was a part of the wealth management team in Van Gogh Preferred Banking in ABN. I quit ABN in July 2008 and took a break to give the CAT (Common Aptitude Test for Indian B-Schools) as I was not able to manage both studies and work. I was not too successful and Joined back work at HSBC India - Wealth Management in July 2009. I worked there for about 7 months when i thought I will give GMAT a last try. So i quit HSBC in Feb, 2010. After which I have not worked.

Now I am thinking if I should apply this year since I have gaps in my career. Would working for a couple of more years make my resume look better? Also I heard from a few people that though the GMAT score is valid for 5 years, some ivy league schools do not consider score older than 3 years. Is there any truth in that?

Please help me out with making this decision as I intend to apply only to B-schools which provide an excellent learning in finance. I would rather apply to an excellent college without scholarship and a loan back9up rather than apply to a top 50 or top 75 B-school with a scholarship, if I am lucky to be entitled to.

GMAT scores: They are valid for 5 years for the most part, so don't worry about that.

While your time off is not good (what did you do since February? most people work while taking the GMAT...were you doing anything else, nonprofit etc? Something that would look good on paper), waiting longer may not help you since you are getting older. Do you think you could improve your GMAT or is 700 a top score for you?

In order to give more specific guidance, I would need to know what school you went to, and what your GPA was. When are you planning on applying? Full time MBA? Many of the R2 deadlines have passed, while some have not and some are rolling.

What are your target schools?

I was busy with some personal work and attended my GMAT classes. I agree with you that most people do work and GMAT together. If I am able to get an opportunity to join an organization, say profit or non-profit, which covers up my gap in employment and provides me with employment for 1-2 years, is it safe to take that and re-apply later? Will that improve my chances of a good B-School?

Do you think you could improve your GMAT or is 700 a top score for you?
Though I feel I could have done better in my GMAT, I don't think I have the focus now to study for GMAT. Moreover I have a fear that I my scored might dip if I don't do it whole-heartedly. However I am willing to do anything that may compensate for my GMAT score and increase my chances of getting into a good B-school.

I went to Anna University in India for my graduate degree. Did my Computer Science Engineering there and scored an equivalent GPA of 3.5.

When are you planning on applying? Full time MBA? Many of the R2 deadlines have passed, while some have not and some are rolling.
I am open to applying this year or later, whichever works for my advantage. Yes, I am keen on doing a full time MBA with a major in finance. I am looking only at very good schools even if it is without a scholarship.

What are your target schools?
Top 25 B-schools globally for a full-time MBA in finance.

No, don't just join a nonprofit for the application, that won't necessarily help you. I was saying it could help if you did something already that we could talk about.

GMAT- if you don't think you can improve it, then don't spend the time. Only worth it if you could improve it.

Undergrad is more important than grad, I meant what undergrad did you go to?

Ok if you are looking at top 25, I can confidently work with you. If you had said top 10, I would have hesitations based on your profile.
