Re: During the Cold War, most overseas travel from the United [#permalink]
I think best of the worst is A.

B. We are not concerned about the "value".

Why A?

As per the argument
Other countries: Safe
Europe: Safer

Given a choice where will you go? To Afganistan or to Iraq? Both are equally unsafe. But if some military expert tells you that Iraq is atleast as unsafe as Afganistan then it means Iraq may be more unsafe but atleast equal to Afganistan. Now where will you go? Clearly Afganistan.

Hence A

I guess paradox will bring out something new topic... so why can't it be value

Not always. To resolve the paradox you must take into account on both sides not just only one side. B gives reason for one side. What about the other side??

Now many other countries are open to travel that are just as safe as Western Europe but are also cheaper

between A & B, I picked 'B' . Thought it is cheaper in other countries, travel to Western Europe is better value

Will go with A.

Despite other countries being as safe as Western Europe, US citizens still percieve Europe to be safer.

Professor wrote:
During the Cold War, most overseas travel from the United States was to places in Western Europe. At that time, because of the war or because of other regional instability, travel to Western Europe was much less risky than travel to other parts of the world. But in recent years this has become less and less the case. Now many other countries are open to travel that are just as safe as Western Europe but are also cheaper and, in most instances, as full of things to do and see. Paradoxically, more people than ever are traveling to Western Europe over these other countries.

Which of the following, if true, contributes most to a resolution of the paradox discussed above?

(A) U.S. travelers feel at least as safe in Western Europe as they would in the other countries. ---> coservatively stated so keep
(B) U.S. travelers recognize the better value of travel to Western Europe. ---> Classic "180." It`s the Eastern Europe Countries that offer better value.
(C) Many airlines would love to acquire exclusive rights to offer flights to some Western European countries. ---> Who cares? I would love a Ferarri Testarossa, but that doesn`t matter.
(D) At one point in time, it was much more difficult to arrange travel to non-Western European countries. ----> True, but this doesn`t resolve the current paradox.
(E) The governments of Western European countries are very concerned with having Americans travel there, so they sometimes transfer the advertising of their country`s merits to other advertising firms. ---> Hmmm, even so, sometimes wouldn`t result in a dramatic rise in tourist numbers.

This knarly beast boils down to A or E.

I`ll take (A) because it contributes the most to resolving (but doesn`t actually resolve) the paradox.

I completely don't see safe vs. safer... it seems both are equal NOW, isn't what this is saying?

B says US travelers recognize better value (FOR THEM) but for everyone else W Europe is a better value... why couldn't this be true???
