Evaluation of profile and Suggestions for b-schools [#permalink] New post 22 Apr 2012, 02:10
Hi Gurus

It is good that GMAT scores are not averaged

Actually I am looking for a serious guidance here - if any one can help.

I had 4 shots at GMAT till date but haven't scored more than 600 Scores are - 560, 600, 490 and 550.

Indian / male / IT techie by background can manage recos from Sr. Exec.

GPA score is 3.1 on 4.

Lots of extra curricular and Social responsibility programs to boast about but never had them written down (as i think if you do a social responsibility - you do not do it to secure admission to a good school, you do it because you like to do it) - is this right?

This is April month, by the time I would take admission I would have had 4 years of work exp in a reputed US based MNC and 1 year in German based automobile Company (IT consulting for the same)

Can any one help me which schools are within my reach? I have read about posts which states how to manage a better Grad school without a good GMAT score. I want to pursue my MBA in Operations Management, specialized in Supply Chain Management - This is the area of consulting my current work profile deals with.

I believe that there are schools out there which are best and which are good / well-to-do. How do I assure myself that if I get admitted into a good / well-to-do school I must make the most out of it.

Many thanks in advance !

Regards
Parijat

Hi Parijit,

Your concerns regarding low GMAT are valid but a low GMAT score can certainly be offset by submitting a good essay and working hard on your application and interviews. Most schools see a combined of all these things to grant an admission.

Your work experience is decent and your involvement in social activities can be highlighted in your essays as most Business schools do look for it. However you would need to cleverly prepare yourself for questions like why you had a low GMAT score, the reasons you want to switch from IT to management, your rationale behind applying for a specific B school, so on and so forth.
You are in perfect stage of your career and a 4-5 years of work experience is what most B Schools look for.

As for which B schools you can apply for an MBA in Supply Chain Management, here is a list of a few of them along with the kind of program they offer:

1. University of Michigan (Master of Supply Chain Management) - A 1-year master's program housed in Michigan's Business School (Ross). With internship
2. Georgia Tech (MBA major in Operations Management)
3. Rochester Institute of Technology (MBA major in Supply Chain Management) - Can be completed in a little less than 2 years. Can major in 2 concentrations.
4. Arizona State University (MBA major in Supply Chain Management) - One of the better-known schools in the field of SCM.
5. University of Cincinnati (MBA major in Operations Management) - Can be completed in 15 months, and this includes an internship! The business school has a research center in Supply Chain Management (http://www.business.uc.edu/supplychain).
6. Northwestern University, Kellogg School (MBA major in Operations Management) -

There are many more but the above list comprises of a few good ones you should definitely target. It is highly advisable in your case to focus on your application evaluation essays. This is where you can demonstrate your leadership qualities, achievements, professional vision and other abilities. A well presented and perfectly written essay is absolutely critical to make a strong case for yourself during the final interview and more so when you have an average GMAT score.

It is highly recommended to seek assistance from professional consultants for guidance who can more closely review your situation and provide you with a list of B Schools where you would have chances of converting your application to admission. You should also get your essays reviewed from them before sending it along with your application to better your prospects.
