Exploring the idea of Applying to Accounting PHD programs [#permalink] New post 24 Feb 2012, 09:48
Hello,
Because of a suggestion by faculty at the University of Maine Business School I am considering applying to several Accounting PHD programs. I do however want an idea of what I may be looking at in terms of my ability to get accepted. So here goes...

1) Basic demographic info:
age 23- (start date would be Fall 2013 so I will be 24).
gender: Female
nationality: American, White

2) Educational Background:
Undergrad School: University of Maine
Undergrad Major: Business with Accounting Focus, Double major in Political Science
GPA: 3.85
GMAT Score: 700

any grad work you've done
University of Maine Business School
MBA Accounting Track (to complete Spring 2013)
Estimated GPA 3.8
Correlle Fellowship: I teach a recitation class for financial and managerial students as well as work as a general teaching aide.

3) Work experience: what is your current role? Have you had any promotions? What industry do you work in? For how long have you worked?

Tutor and Coordinator of Tutor Program
Tax preparer- 2 years
Internal Audit Intern- 2 years (Insurance Industry)
Accounting Assistant- Current (Insurance Industry and Subsidized Housing Industry)

All work was done while also being a full-time student, I have never been "out of school."

5) Short/Long term goals: what do you want to do after your PHD? Any geographic preferences?
I want to teach and be part of a research team, however with the emphasis being on teaching. My long-term goals are to live in New England and hopefully bring innovative learning styles to different accounting curriculums.

6) Schools: Which schools have you considered already? Any on your initial short list?
A best case scenario would be to get into a school in the Northeast: Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, UConn

If I had to branch out beyond New England I would want to stay on the east coast, hopefully in a mid-tier school that would allow me opportunity to teach as well as do research.

Thank you for any help,
Alyssa

You have a decent profile. But, I didnt understand why you want to do a PhD. What is your motivation? What is your long term goal? Moreover, I couldn't get any of your achievements in the accounting. Have you published any paper? Why are you interested in 'accounting'? If you can answer these questions, I think you can get into one of the schools in your target list. Good luck!

Valid points. To the "why I want a PHD in accounting." For one, I am fascinated by accounting, I enjoy numbers but I am more interested in the behavioral/psychological side of accounting and why we account for things the way we do. The processes and functions of financial reporting, why people commit fraud or misrepresent themselves, all things I would be interested in researching. The second is because I truly want to teach. I spent 3 years tutoring everything from math, to accounting, to economics, to political science, to sociology and I want to continue that atmosphere in a professional environment. I also spent two years as a coordinator for the same tutoring programs.

I have not published any papers in accounting, however recently I approached one of my professor's who is an editor for an accounting magazine to see if I can work on something with her (research for her, editing, etc.)- I would have at least 8 months to get my hands into some research before applying.

Anything specific about any of the schools on my list???
