You don't want to hear this, but a campus visit really is the best way to evaluate fit. When you visit you can sit in one classes, mingle with students, and ask questions of the admissions committee.l You may not have time to visit, but remember that there are thousands of other applicants who find time to do it (and thus gain an edge)!
If you can't visit, though, see if you can meet a local alum, either for a formal interview or for just an informal chat. The admissions office may be able to help you with that. Also, most of these schools tour around the country, doing information sessions. Definitely attend those if you can.
