It seems to me that the 3 month gap in 2003 may be fairly common if one worked overseas after graduation. Could i assume they would see it this way? One issue is that I don't really talk about the research project in my essays. However, tt is referred to it in my resume. Please advise. Thanks.

Working part-time rather than full-time during the summer after your college graduation is not something you need to address in an essay. It's a non-issue. The 4-month gap after your foreign research also does not need to be explained in an essay. If you have space in some essay, you may want to discuss that research project, since it was overseas, which enhances your international profile. Of course, if you have had a lot of international experiences then this research experience is not as significant.
