Its a risk, but by the time I get my offer I should have an idea of how many closed lists I've made, so I'll have a sense of what my other options could be. If I don't make any of the great GM role closed lists, then I'll take the consulting and try again next year. Honestly, a lot of it will have to do with how tired / crushed / confident I feel after my consulting interviews. I'm not going to worry about "what ifs" now... its near impossible to compare all the possible combinations ahead of time... so for now, I'm just gonna roll with it, and if I find myself up against a wall, I'll decide then.

Rhyme, what are the great GM companies you are targeting? Just curious as I try to focus my own career search for next year.

Rhyme are you aiming for Fortune 100 GM positions (rotational) at companies like GE or for industry specific? I am torn between aiming specifically for the industry I really want to be in and going for big ones next year, I think much like going with a big name generalized consulting company a huge name corp. gives a lot more exit options than something specific.

GE is supposed to be a fantastic place for GM - excellent training, development, eclectic work experiences, and a CEO factory.

Thank god it is over. I am going to drop out of the slower ongoing things. I have a bank that wants me to summer, and agrees with me in being suited to the trading side. And in the US, which is very rare achievement historically for people from the UK (or so I have been told countless times during recruiting).

There has been some very strange twists and turns in this whole recruiting cycle. One of my main sponsors at a favored bank no longer is there - the market is not particularly fun right now. I am happy to be pushed away from a temptation that may have been bad for me (a firm with almost too many strong connections that may have made the summer... weird).

Roll on a semester full of drinking!

Hey rhyme, glad to know that you are focusing on GM.......That is exactly what I am looking forward to focus during the recruiting….it is really weird though…..Almost every other student at Columbia is so heavily finance focused that you start feeling out of place…..Surprisingly, I have not seen many students showing interest in consulting either….anyway, would like to chat with you about GM recruiting……

I want a consulting internship. But, if I for some reason don't get an internship offer from a consulting firm, what is the best 'substitute'? that would give me good experience before I apply for jobs at consulting firms next year?
I am thinking GM... but what do you guys think?

GM is a good bet and a common substitute. The recruitment schedule is also a bit later, so that helps. There are also internal consulting roles and internal strategy that offer some of the experience. I would guess that they're also less competitive, but don't know for sure.

How does recruiting for GM work? Rhyme, I guess there is pressure on you now to start a series of posts for GM, as Pelihu did for IB :) I'm also interested in GM - and while IB Im certainly not interested in, Consulting I'm worried I would get sucked into.

Is is worth me starting my internship hunt now or should i wait until i've matriculated. Considering I won't be starting b-school until later this year? I already have some companies i want to target and was wondering if I showed some love early on before i've even started b-school they may appreciate it. Plus i could always ask them which b-school they prefer to recruit from and adjust my decision accordingly.

I would say that if you already have connections at those companies, it's never too early to start improving those relationships. It's also never too early to start building new relationships -- as long as it's in a non-job-seeking, info-brokering sort of way. If your brother-in-law works at Company X, get him to introduce you to some people, and start building a network there.

When you're in the info stage, you don't want to show up with your resume or even really talk about getting a job. Instead it's about learning about the person, the industry and the company in general.

And I think you want to keep it in the info stage. Be careful about being a pain in the arse, too. They've got a recruiting schedule, and you are suddenly showing up outside of that.

You can be in information broker, play it cool, and work within organic networks and still get the info you're looking for.

IMHO, of course.

I might drop a specultaive information hunting e-mail to the main company i`m targetting. I have no links there. It is a boutique consultancy/market research company specialising in the industry where i have most of my work experience. Based in 2 sites, London and Singapore.

I know a lot of you want info on GM... as soon as my recruiting is over, I promise to post. Right now, its a bit nuts. I have 5 more interviews over the next two days, at at least 6 next week.

I think it'd be quite hard to not get any consulting job at all. There's a zillion consulting companies out there (and that's a conservative estimate) so you just need to put in the work and you'll eventually get a job. If, however, you are talking about getting into a specific subset of consulting companies (quoting the herd:M/B/B) then that's another story.

But it's also bad if you're always standing off alone in a corner. When moving around recruiting events, try to engage not just the recruiters, but your fellow classmates as you move around. Recruiters will notice which students seems to get along with a wide variety of people, and which aren't welcomed by their peers. This definitely matters.

This is money right here. It is easy to get caught up in all the invite only functions. I had a recruiter flat tell me the reason they have these open bar functions and dinners isn't just to help everyone relax and get to know each other, but also to see how you act when drinking. To quote, "What kind of person will you become 3 glasses of wine into a dinner with a CEO?"

And, yeh, being rude to people you don't think matter (wait staff, secretarys, admin personnel) . . . will KILL you . . . every single time.

Re: How's everyone's internship hunt going? [#permalink]
lepium, thanks for pointing this out :) I guess I was not clear enough, I want a job/internship with a big 3 management consulting firm.

Anyways, I have another question:
How much do big 3 consulting firms pay to the interns for the summer? (per entire summer not per month)?!?!?

Thanks!!!
