Hi,

Being new to GMAT and this Forum, I was flooded with all kinds of info on how to prepare and where to start from? At the end of it all, I was just confused and nothing else.

Would appreciate it if some1 could tell me what books are the safest bet for GMAT for Quant?

You should search the forum...this is a frequently asked and answered question.

But in general, I would start with a book called Cracking the GMAT (Princeton Review). It has the best overall review of the test, and the practice tests are pretty accurate. Also be sure to get the Official Guide, 11th edition (plenty of math practice) and download GMATPrep, the free official tests (https://www.mba.com).

Start with those, and then you'll see where to finetune.

I personally bought almost all the books available for GMAT (bought second hands) and downloaded all the free guides, etc. All the books are written in different styles. You need to read some of the books and you need to find out "your style of study" and then go for it. Reading everything out there will not get you anywhere. I think people needs to focus on one style of learning and stick to it.

I would recommend to start with OG 11 and later switch to Cracking the GMAT.

I would advise against that. You want to save the OG and the GMATPrep until you are fully prepared. They are gold and you shouldn't waste them in the beginning.

i agree with kidderek, save the OG11 and GMATPrep to the end in that order

start off with other books like kaplan, pr, or mgmat. after you get through those, you will be frustrated by the terribly written questions and then relieved at how sane the actual test prep materials are. Then work through the ENTIRE OG11, and even the supplemental quant and verbal books if you have time.

save the GMATPreps for the last two weeks. take one when you feel confident, and use it to check if you have any glaring oversights. otherwise take the next one a few days before your actual test.

If you are average like me and getting easily confused with preparation, stick with one reliable source Kaplan, Princeton, manhattan, powerscore..etc.. to learn the basics. If you take from too many sources, you'll get confused and will not retain much. Stick with their approach on attacking problems and perfect it with practice.

If you are a mutant or genetic freak, you'll see clarity in message forums and see clarity in the thousands of different approaches to problems.
