Hunter: Hunters alone are blamed for the decline in Greenrock National Forest’s deer population over the past ten years. Yet clearly, black bears have also played an important role in this decline. In the past ten years, the forest’s protected black bear population has risen sharply, and examination of black bears found dead in the forest during the deer hunting season showed that a number of them had recently fed on deer.

In the hunter’s argument, the boldface portion plays which of the following roles?

A. It is the main conclusion of the argument.
B. It is an objection that has been raised against the main conclusion of the argument.
C. It is a judgment that the argument opposes.
D. It is a finding that the argument seeks to explain.
E. It provides evidence in support of the main conclusion of the argument.

I would go with A.

It is the conclusion of the argument.

There are are two premises:
1. Hunters alone are blamed for ...
2. Dead Black bears' examination .....

Based on these 2 premises the argument concludes that
Black bears have also played an important role in the decline.

It is certainly not the conclusion of the argument.

So A is out.

It not against the argument

So B is out...

How about D...

The new discovery is partially explained by an examination of the dead black bears. This constitutes new evidence.

New discovery= finding.

Between B and D, I will bet on D since it is more than an objection. It takes into consideration the explaining part also (said in the sentences after the bold part).

I think this is D.

Hunter is trying to explain a finding that opposes the argument by somebody xyz. Conclusion of the hunter is "black bears have also played an important role in this decline."
