IELTS is an English Standardized Test,like you have the TOEFL.
This is used by Business Schools all over Europe and Many top schools in the US consider your IELTS with the GMAT score.
I gave my IELTS in the month of September 2011.
I score an 8.0 on 9.0.
If anyone needs further help on this,kindly let me know.

- IELTS Target Band 7.0: good tips and strategies
- The set of Cambridge test books: I believe the latest is 7th. The earlier ones (1,2,3) are in old format of ielts and a little bit harder
- For speaking, I prefer the books of Mat Clark.

Not finding proper guidance for IELTS preparation exams? Visit meetuniv and look for the ielts-preparation section you will find what you need. And get all the videos and lectures and tips for IELTS Preparation and clarify all the doubts you have for IELTS Exam.

yes for writing, reading and listening the cambridge books are good
but you need to get feedback on your writing
for speaking strategies, search for ielts6plus (one word) on youtube and watch those videos
they also have writing strategies i think
