In a single row of yellow, green and red colored tiles, [#permalink]
24 Jun 2006, 15:24
In a single row of yellow, green and red colored tiles, every red tile is preceded immediately by a yellow tile and every yellow tile is preceded immediately by a green tile. What color is the 24th tile in the row?
(1) The 18th tile in the row is not yellow.
(2) The 19th tile in the row is not green.

It has to be E
We have that the order is ......R-Y-G.......
1)INSUF
Meaning 18 could be either R or G, so with dont know the color for the 24
2)INSUF
Meaning 19 could be either Y or R, so with dont know the color for the 24
TOGETHER:
We can have 18-R and 19-Y OR 18-G and 19-R --> INSUF
-E-

the order is: G-Y-R.
nothing is given about what if before G and after R.
1. if 18th is not Y, it could be G or R........NSF.
2. if 19th is not G, it could be Y or R........NSF.
togather also NSF. if 19th is Y, 20th is R then donot know.. if 19th is R then 20th donot know.
SO E.

I also agree for E for the above reason.

Pattern is G-Y-R: the question stem states red is PRECEEDED by yellow and that yellow is PRECEEDED by green.
1) Not Suff alone
2) Not Suff alone
Combined - sufficient
18 is not yellow so it can be red or green
19 is not green, but cant be red - because if it is then 18 must be yellow and we know according to piece 1 it is not.
We also know that 18 cant be red, because following red would have to be green if the pattern is G-Y-R. So 18 must be green and 19 must be yellow.
I could be wrong but I think it is C.

(E) for me too.
Pattern is G-Y-R
However,I am not sure how we can calculate 24th tile if we are given information abt 18/19th tiles.. Have I missed something inthequestion ?
We can have a sequence of Green tiles, since Green tiles doesnt need to be immedialtely followed by Yellow (only vice versa is true.)

I'm thinking both together answers the question:
In a single row of yellow, green and red colored tiles, every red tile is preceded immediately by a yellow tile and every yellow tile is preceded immediately by a green tile. What color is the 24th tile in the row?
The pattern is gyrgyrgyr...
(1) The 18th tile in the row is not yellow.
18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24,
G Y R G Y R
R G Y R G Y
Tile 24 could be Red or Yellow... insuff
(2) The 19th tile in the row is not green.
18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24
G Y R G Y R
Y R G Y R G
Tile 24 could be Red or Green..
Together -- since the 18th Tile can't be Yellow it must be green... making tile 24 Red.
Can anyone confirm this.

Agree with C.
#1 and #2 are not sufficient by themselves. However, when we combine the two, since the order is defined to be ...-G-Y-R-..., we can have only one combination - 18th pos R and 19th pos G. Extrapolate to get the colour of the 24th.

I got C.
There are three possibilities:
1. GYR.....
2. YRG.....
3. RGY.....
St1: This means structure is not no 3. It is either 1 or 2: INSUFF
St1: This means structure is not no 1. It is either 2 or 3: INSUFF
Combined: Structure is no 2 and 24th tile is Green.
I got it wrong. Yes thi sshould be E.
Structure could be GGGGGGGGGGGGGGYR

1) insuff

the patter can be starting from 14th position
GGGYRGGG
YYYRGYGGG
Both satisfy conditon given in question
2) in Suff
Same reason
Both
Same reasoning can be given
