“In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior. In other countries, there is little or no censorship.”
In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio Programs? Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.
The censor board in some countries is very active and careful in prohibiting the use of offensive language and behaviour by television and radio programs; on the other hand there exist no censorship in few countries. In this discussion, I shall present arguments favouring the censorship of programs.
It is very essential for a country to censor its television and radio programs which plays a vital role in shaping up a healthy society. Results of a survey show that in a society of 1000 people nearly 60% are under 16 years of age and spend on an average 5 to 6 hours daily either on television or radio programs.
Remembering an incident took place in America in 2004 at “Janet Jackson Superbowl halftime show” during which an uncensored abusive act of Janet Jackson was telecasted on television. An estimate 140 million people were watching the halftime show during which incident occurred. Later on the show was fined for $275,000 by censor board.
In such cases government should come forward with strict laws against those programs which are flooding society with corrupt thoughts specially children. On the contrary it should promote programs featuring national integrity, child welfare.
The censor board of every country should also keep in mind its cultural activities while regulating the laws. Sometimes a show which can be viewed publically in countries like America, need to be censored in countries India.
Big telecast channels are also taking a positive step by not allowing such programs to be telecasted which do not pass censor certificate and also breaking the contracts with such programs which are showing offensive behaviour.
Television and radio are one of the best sources of spreading information and awareness in society, now it is in the hands of a country to regulate strict censor laws for creating a healthy environment.
