1st one is grammatically a good sentence, not the most beautiful, but, yes, logical.
it considers anomalies as singular b/c it assumes that a bunch of anomalies led to the discovery. ...co-relate 'everyone' or 'each' with this.
furthermore, IT is a subject ..thus, 'was' will go with it.
