A.The answer choice should have its - referring to singular antecedent movement. Also A is preferable to C as it gives the description which holds good for all movements.

In response to: "Why not answer choice B? Doesn't it make sense to say that all movements (PL) were either a brushstroke or a paint splatter(S) and they (PL) were contributing...."

If you said that all movements (plural) were either a brushstroke or a paint splatter--then you would be implying the movements were either 100% brush stroke or 100% paint splatters---but no mixture is possible. This is not what the author is trying to say.

In order to convey the idea that some were brush strokes and some were paint splatters, you need to say "each"--and describe how each one is either this or that.

Therefore, (B) is not what we want. Instead, we want (A).

Zeke, one question between (A) and (C), how do you choose EACH.
Each refers to SINGULAR....

Jackson Pollock, an influential American painter credited with the birth of abstract expressionism, has been called an "action painter" for his method of creating works of art that are the products of spontaneous movements, each movement a brushstroke or a paint splatter contributing its own unique flair to the production of the final masterpiece.

Do you cut this out and read or read as :

Jackson Pollock, an influential American painter credited with the birth of abstract expressionism, has been called an "action painter" for his method of creating works of art that are the products of spontaneous movements, each movement a brushstroke or a paint splatter contributing its own unique flair to the production of the final masterpiece.

or as the below :

Jackson Pollock, an influential American painter credited with the birth of abstract expressionism, has been called an "action painter" for his method of creating works of art that are the products of spontaneous movements, each movement a brushstroke or a paint splatter contributing its own unique flair to the production of the final masterpiece.

Here we cannot use EACH..

I want to know how you read this.

Here the keyword is "movement" right after the comma. So we know the way to read it is like this:

Jackson Pollock, an influential American painter credited with the birth of abstract expressionism, has been called an "action painter" for his method of creating works of art that are the products of spontaneous movements, each movement a brushstroke or a paint splatter contributing its own unique flair to the production of the final masterpiece.

or really:

[This guy] has been called blah for creating works of art that are the products of spontaneous movements, each movement a brushstroke or a paint splatter contributing its own unique flair to the production of the final masterpiece.

Yes, "Each" is singular---but the idea here is lots of singulars combine to make up the notion of "movements." You still need to describe each movement by itself.
