Know faculty member - Put this on app? Where?

A family friend is a professor at one of the schools I will be applying to. I've known them for most of my life, but never had any professional interaction with them - only personal. For this reason, I don't want to ask them to write me a letter of recommendation because I don't feel they would be able to best answer those questions. However, there's no where on the app to list this person - they only ask if direct family are alumni of the school.

Does anyone have any recommendations on if/how I should list this? I considered just putting a line or two about it in the 'additional info' essay for lack of anywhere more suitable. I know this is a bit of a unique situation, but the professor said he would be glad for me to list him on the app, and my thought is it can only help.

You always have the option of having him send in a letter of support rather than an actual recommendation letter. He can just shoot an email to the ad com stating that he has known you personally for a long time and can vouch for your personal attributes. Most ad coms would simply print this letter out and add it to your application file. This way you not only get his reference into your application but also have your professional recommendations intact.

Is there a class with this professor that you want to take? Did this professor influence your decision to apply to the school? If knowing him has no bearing on your story finding a way to work his name into your app may seem forced and be conveyed as name dropping. Why does simply knowing this professor matter?

Thanks this makes a lot of sense and is definitely more the approach I was thinking.
