Is there a class with this professor that you want to take? Did this professor influence your decision to apply to the school? If knowing him has no bearing on your story finding a way to work his name into your app may seem forced and be conveyed as name dropping. Why does simply knowing this professor matter?

Well faculty should want quality students as much as the admissions department. Therefore, his opinion should be of some value. However, not being a boss or co-worker, much of the more professional experience based questions for standard recommendations would not apply.

I totally agree with the above. Go with a support letter.

You always have the option of having him send in a letter of support rather than an actual recommendation letter. He can just shoot an email to the ad com stating that he has known you personally for a long time and can vouch for your personal attributes. Most ad coms would simply print this letter out and add it to your application file. This way you not only get his reference into your application but also have your professional recommendations intact.

Thanks this makes a lot of sense and is definitely more the approach I was thinking.
