Long Term Career Goals [#permalink] New post 18 Dec 2012, 19:48
Hi,

I was an economics degree undergrad and after 4 years working in the public accounting industry, I want to change careers. Most schools seem to ask for your short and long term career goals, but I honestly don't know what I want to do other than something in the finance industry. I am leaning to something in corporate finance or investment banking but nothing specific.

I am not sure what to write in these essays as I am unsure what my career goals are in the long term.

Any help is much appreciated.

Sean,

First of all realize that you are not signing a contract in these essays. The schools want to see that you have direction and that you won't flounder when you arrive.

I suggest you quickly ask for informational interview from a few people who are in positions that you may want to go after. Talk to them about what they do, whether they like it, and the education that prepared them (or would have prepared them better) to do it.

Ideally you want to define your goal in terms of function and industry and this goal should be anchored at least somewhat by your experience. If you want to do investment banking or corporate finance for high tech and can relate that goal to real life experience, you're in business.
